New project, which transmission?

Picked up a 73 this weekend and have been assessing what's got to be done to it. Found that the transmission and transfer case had no oil, just water. Not good but not a big deal. Any idea which transmission came in the 73 CJ5? It has the 232 straight six in it an a D20 transfer case. By the way, I bought it for parts, and my son decided we need to put it back together.http://s959.photobucket.com/albums/ae73/jc588/73 CJ/

Me thinks it SHOULD be a T-14 trans (3 speed) dunno what the 4 speed # is and a Dana 20 transfer case.
(I got the info here, there is a tech page, all kinds of good info) .
I was thinkin' when I do my 4.0 H.O. swap putting a 5 speed trans in, just to try to sqeeze a few more MPG outta my jeep.

    Yes, T-14.

You can also use the T-15 and Dana 20 from a '72-75 CJ or '72-73 Commando with a V8, or with some minor changes, a T-150 and D20 from a '76-79 CJ. If you use the T-150, you'll need the bellhousing and the clutch parts. Either of these would be an upgrade.

There's a '74 factory manual online at www.oljeep.com and a '72 factory manual online at www.trailforge.com - either of these will cover the T-14, and the drivetrain/options in '74 are the same as in '73.

Thanks for the replies guys. I wasn't sure which one it was. I'd like to use the parts for my 66, but it doesn't look like my son is gonna let that happen. Thanks again

    nickmil In mothballs.

Just a side note, the I-6 T-14 uses a different input shaft than the V-6 version and IIRC 2nd gear is different as well.
