Heater core

    My 1980 cj 5 heater core is leaking out on to the floor. How do I go about getting to it to replace it? I took a look under the dash and I didnt see any screws to remove the plastic cover, looked like the screws came from the other side ???? Thanks for any help.

    If you want I can go out to the garage and look at the one from my 78. I think you may have to remove the entire assembly from the vehicle. I will go check now just because now I'm curious.

    Ok, I went out and looked at mine since I have it pulled out of the Jeep already. You will need to take the heater assembly completely out of the vehicle. After you do that, there are small hex head screws on the back of the ductwork that let you remove the back panel and get to the heater core and blower motor.

    If you look at the fire wall from the engine compartment there are bolts that stick through with kepnuts (a nut with a star washer attached) on them. The bolts are molded into the heater box. Take the nuts off (might want to hit them with some penetrating oil first). You will also have to disconnect the heater hoses from the core at the firewall and the plug for the blower motor. You will probably also have to remove the heater control cables. The heater box should then pull free from the intake part that connects to the cowl. You'll probably also have to remove the defroster duct as well. If you can take the dashboard off it will be much easier to get it all out and put back together right. Also there should be a small rubber hose that is molded at a 90 degree angle near the bottom of the blower motor. You will have to remove that from the engine compartment side.

    yes, the bolt are on the fire wall in the engine compartment. This is not hard to do, I have replaced them several times. Sounds like alot but is very simple.
    sharp looking jeep by the way. NICE!
