electric fan

    I have an electric fan in the 57 (283 sbc). The temperature switch is in the intake manifold (Edelbrock performer, front driver side). I believe the set point is on at 195 and off at 185. Question, the fan is wired so that if the ignition switch is either in run/ignition or acc then there is power to the fan (runs when hits set point). Otherwise when the key is removed the fan stops. So when I leave it in acc and the fan is running, it seems to run for a while but will eventually stop (no water flow so it takes a while for the temp to drop). I assume it is like other cars (modern) with electric fans, only they seem to sun if the car is switched off.

    1) How should I (or should I) wire the fan to run when the key is out?

    2) Is the temperature switch in a good place? I mean the water tem (as it is sensing) is still high which is why I assume it is still running. If the fan continues to run for a while (what is typical) after shut off, will there be a big drain on the battery?

    I had my probe in the radiator, but I moved it to the intake manifold as that's closer to actuall engine temp than the radiator. So yes, IMO, it should be in the intake near the thermostat. On you SBC the fitting in either head would work too.
    As far as the fan circuit, I tussled a bit before deciding it didn't need to run when the key is off. As you noted, there is no water flow with the engine off anyway, so all you're doing is cooling the water in the radiator. I wired mine through the ignition switch, and a toggle on the dash so I could turn it on manually if the controller failed, or turn it off if I wanted to (stream crossing, etc.)

    He has a 283----good chance there is no head fitting for water temp.

    I actually have 305 heads so I do have a port. My temperature gauge detector is in that position. Thanks for the info.
