So I am at a loss on my 1969 CJ-5 and I am in need of help. I am wiring the Jeep with a painless kit and for the life of me I just don’t quite understand it. Electrical is not really my strong suit but I do know that if I get it wrong there are some pretty serious consequences.

Is there anyone in the Southern California area that would be willing to help me out for a day? I really just need help with the engine wiring. The dash, lights and that stuff are pretty straight forward and already done. Willing to pay you (either cash or beer or your favorite drinks) for the help. Thanks!

Same here, I would help because in my experience, Painless is anything but. It's all doable, but as i remember, it's just not intuitive.

That was my experience as well. I took one look at the kit and returned it. Bought a bunch of different color wires and a bluesea fuse panel and wired everything myself - significantly cheaper and significantly less pain.

The engine wires should be fairly straightforward to hook up. What part of the engine harness are up having problems with? Is the harness a cj specific kit or a universal?

    FWIW this one?
    Genny-Regulator diagram_4.gif

I've been kinda holding back on this thread because I don't know the OP's engine/charging setup and this drawing doesn't really touch on the ignition for either the V6 or the F4 which can vary on all sorts of stuff that's been done to the vehicle over the years. If this helps great :).

If not print it out, crumple it up & circular file it :D

A ‘69 should have an alternator. If BMoney used a single-wire alternator, that would even simplify things a little more.

I have a Dauntless V6, I’ll post a picture of the alternator a little later today.

Here are photos of the alternator and voltage regulator.

I have the following wires that I am trying to figure out right now where they go.

795 - Alt Regulator Power (Battery)

714 - To Alternator Regulator Exciter

    716 - To MIDI Fuse

I am also trying to figure out where the wires from the voltage regulator go to as well.

For the midi fuse, you run the heavy gauge wire that connects to the positive lug on the alternator to one side of the midi fuse. 716 (its labled 916 on my harness) should be the msin power suppy for the harness and connects to the same terminal on the midi fuse as the alternator wire. The othe midi termial you can run heavy gauge wire to the batery positive trminal or to the starter relay positive terminal.

If you switch out the alternator to a gm 10si or a 12si you can get rid of the external regulator box and get higher output.

I only have 3 wires coming out of the regulator, not 4 which is throwing me off.

For the MIDI Fuse I would assume the 716/916 wire goes to one side of the fuse and the other side connects to the positive battery terminal? Do I have another tail from one side of the MIDI fuse that goes to the positive side of the alternator as well?

Yes. One side goes to the battery or starter relay, the other side goes to the alternator. The harness power wire connects to the same side of the fuse as the alternator.

In my opinion I would put in a 10si 12si alternator and eliminate the regulator it is a very good upgrade to your electrical system . Also get a good wiring schematic it helps a lot . There is a couple good ones posted in the tech section.

Not sure these will help but here’s some electrical system pics from my service manual for the dauntless.

What I have done with the factory diagram is, make a copy then take some different color hi-liters to it. Much easier to follow.

Thank you everyone for the help, ended up switching to a GM 12si 94 amp alternator and life is easy now.
