We are worn out from Beryl the hurricane. Our mini Aussie senses the hurricane long before we do, she becomes anxious, gets on the bed and parks her wiggle button near my head!grrr I finally got up at 5 am, the wind starts picking up, nothing bad, then the lights go out, but we have a Generac generator;). About 8:30ish wind and rain starts picking up, nothing bad yet. However that changes soon enough when seeing one of our recent trees on its side(didn't like the tree anyway), then the long fence where I have all my banners on, most of it went down(the fence was in bad shape), of course limbs and branches are all over the yard.

As when I was looking out the back window, the metal roof on my tall garage was lifting in the corner about a foot or two when gusts would hit it. I don't want to be replacing the metal, so Gary and I went out there in attempt to secure it just long enough to get past the storm. On my 10' step ladder I was able to put a couple brackets by sheet metal screws, then with 2 tie downs, rope them off on the garage rail supports. It did the job, but did a job on me. The generator doesn't supply electricity out there, so it was dark, couldn't find a darned, the wind was howling intermittently and rain as well, but with my portable light I found what I needed. Long story short, what we did worked.

Now the worst is over and what remains is just strong gusty winds, occasional band of rain~ actually kind of pleasant;) We have our work cut out for us over the next few days~ otherwise, for us, all it well;):D

Ah, it is bad enough, but I am glad you all had no severe flooding, being so close to the coast and all. I had visions of your shop and cars under water. Glad you are all ok. keep us posted on what is happening with you all. Prayers for you and your neighbors.

Hi! Just posting measurements as requested by a fellow mopar guy. He's helping me to determine how much to shave from the head and block.
Here I just had cleaned up the top of a piston, amazed now nice it looks;)

Here I'm cc'ing the combustion chamber area for volume. I made a little hole in the plexiglass, the put grease around the chamber in question, inject isopropalalcohol, came out to 62cc per cylinder.

The rest are just other measurements~ I have to get with Zach to see what I do with the measurements.

I feel your pain. We get 50+mph wind gusts a couple of times a year. Our house sits behind a saddle which acts like a venturi which accelerates the winds even more. A couple of years ago we were rocking a huge wind storm. About nine o'clock I made the mistake of looking out my kitchen window to see about 400 square feet of barn roof missing, rafters and all. Out in the wind we go to try to tarp everything before the inevitable torrential rains came.
This is when we found out we had inadequate insurance on the barn.

Well well well, amazing how quickly the trip to Philly goes by~ I just don't do well with airports and sleeping afar!

Nice to be home;) Not much is going on other than "studying" the engine. All in an effort to get better compression. I'll be sending the cam off to a place called Oregon Cams. A fella from the Forabodies is helping me. However, I'm figuring the machine shop, which I have an appointment with next week, will do the figurin to achieve, say 8.7ish compression.

I don't know how well I did on this, but I came up with 7.76~ probably wrong, but it's what I got. My friend thinks this is too high of compression for the year is from. Never have gone this far in engine performance. I Think the head gasket really can lower compression. The early gaskets were steel, very thin, now they're a thick whatever material. very sad

the engine is completely torn down, pistons de-ringed, cleaned, they look great! Hopefully they can be reusued. Maybe they'll re-hone the cylinders, new main/connecting rod bearings. and already mentioned somewhere about the shaving of the head and block.

I'm thinking to get the machine shop to check the parts out, (block, head, crank, pistons). I'll assemble here with the re-ground cam. Sounds easy enough. I'd like to get it together, then mount it on my engine run stand for safe keeping, really make it squeaky clean and painted to my satisfaction;)
    dne' ;)

I wish I could have found this earlier, but alas, life is good with what I have;)

Unless the 225 head design is *that* bad, 8.6:1 is *barely* what I would consider compression at all on a fresh engine =P

I think you're gonna be fine, I don't even know if you could advance the ignition timing far enough on an 8.6:1 static compression motor to get it to ping, and still have the thing run

The forabodies forum have things to say, but I'll leave it up to the machine shop that I'm going to, to help me make a rational decision.
I'm asked by a few, what are my plans for the car, race, super power, etc. We go to car gatherings to meet people and socialize, be in the presence of good people with the love for classic cars. I bet we don't put 300 miles on the car after completion~ lol, meh, just decent compression, run well, and have the WOW factor when popping the hood
Above all, have fun, something to do. I don't know what most retired people even do other than play bingo.

A while back, a British(very well off) friend came to our place, the other home. At that time I had the 59 Chevy truck in a thousand pieces, she says in her British accent, "and you enjoy this?"

Aye, like I said, 8.6:1 isn't a pie in the sky sort of compression to be shooting for, and should result in a nice streetable engine with good manners. It's not something that I'd really be worrying about *breaking* things, should run fine on basic old unleaded pump gas, etc.

Well, 7.76 does leave room for...forced induction....

    But I digress...

Well, we are all a bunch of dreamers;) Too bad we all don't live closer together, we could have a hoot n nanny of a good time;)

Other thoughts~ I'm thinking I'd like to mount the alternator on the drivers side, this would make room for~ see next pic

A mini-sanden AC compressor like in my Triumph(hm, I did that?) At least that's what I'm thinking, then I'd just have to say I'll be going with manual steering:( I'm just thinkin , when I get the engine back together, I can visualize it much better o_O

Darn, wish I had kept this 170 now:( anyway, shows possible room for the mini AC compressor where the alt is. It'd be neat tucked away on that side, AC hoses would be routed much better, can't wait to put the engine in to see if this may work!

I mean, on a relatively lightweight vehicle like a Dart, I don't think you're going to be *that* unhappy with manual steering. At some point in the future, you could probably swap to a rack and pinion of some sort, they make kits for darn near anything anymore to add them.

I was messing around with the exhaust manifold, I did take the intake apart from the exhaust as the assembly was apparently dropped and the mating surfaces were off. I was told by mopar people that I should open the exhaust up to at least 2.25" since running better compression. If I open up the exit of the exhaust to at least match the exhaust gasket, the exhaust pipe is relatively tiny. I'm thinking to open the exhaust port to match the gasket, then remove the little remanent pipe, open that flange hole to accept a 2.25", weld on the piece of 2.25" exhaust pipe? Then when ready, the exhaust shop can weld the exhaust onto what I installed. How's that sound?;) or any other ideas other than buy a really expensive exhaust header:sneak:, which I'm not going to do;)
