I just recently bought this 1974 CJ-5, and it came with this big, honkin' old winch on the front.

A little Googling made me think initially that it was the famous M8274, but then a little more looking at it made me realize that no, it's not.

    It's older than the M8274.

Turns out it is kind of a transitional model, made shortly after Warn acquired Belleview. From what I've found online, Warn called it the 6014, intending it to have a 6,000 lb. capacity. And mine is stamped "6014" and a serial number below that.

Supposedly, they discovered that it actually had an 8,000 lb. capacity, so they started calling it the 8200. But they produced it only for a couple years before coming out with the 8274.

As far as I can tell so far, it works perfectly. I do need to replace the three short power cables that go to the motor, because they're all very weather-beaten and the insulation is completely degraded, but that's no big deal.

With that brake assembly, that was the last edition of the original Belleview winch, the 8200 and is rated at 8000 lbs. You can use an 8274 or 9.5XP motor on those with an adapter. The pinion tooth count is the same.

I've got a couple of those in my garage, fixing to add one to the CJ-6 at some point. The 8200 I think was built for less than a year between the original style Bellview winch and the 8274. Basically the old case, with new 8274 features.

If you end up needing any of the internals, you may find Warn doesn't support many of them. I had good luck with a company named Gigglepin, located in England. I had to replace the mainshaft on mine and that was the only supplier I could find. They have a very interesting website. Apparently there is some form of "winch racing" in England and Gigglepin makes aftermarket parts catering to that. They have a dual motor modification and they have scary fast line speed. My winch is an 8274 circa 1985.
