Greetings, should the radiator shroud struts on my 64 CJ5 be straight or bent? The driver side strut was bent downward about 5 degrees about 8” from the firewall. I made it straight am I OK?

The driver side is bent from the factory, i think it's a holdover from the M38A1 for some reason. I think straight is OK, when i got Tonk he had straight threaded rods for supports.

Maybe to clear the shovel mounted under the hood.

Mine are bent. Never thought about why.
Got a shovel in the M38A1 hood but never gave it much thought.

Thanks for the replies. Now I know why the rod was bent and it makes perfect sense!

With the shovel mounted towards the back of the hood, shouldn't the bend be up, making a "u" like shape instead of a "n" like bend? Are mine upside-down? I'd throw a pic on, but the ones I have don't show it well, and I can't be bothered to fold the windshield back up at the current moment only to put it back down again when I drive tomorrow.

Too much stuff on the hood right now to look, but pretty sure it is bent on my 1964 CJ5.

Learned something again from this group! Here I thought I might have to find a donor Jeep to find a replacement.

I was looking at a pretty much intact M38A1 yesterday. It had the shovel brackets but no shovel. Both rods were bent upward in the middle; i.e. they were "humped" up.
