Hey guys, almost two years into my complete CJ5 rebuild, and am starting to get to the finishing stages. The original steering shaft was rusted out, and we couldn't get the U joints off so we just cut it, now its time to figure out how to rebuild it.

The frame and steering components is a '73, while the tub is a '78. It has a 2" body lift in order to get the body to clear the 258 sitting under the hood. I was looking at Borgeson parts and need help figuring out what I need.

Should I order the '72-'75 telescoping shaft, or the '76+?

Additionally, how long of a "upper" shaft should I order? I struggled measuring the one that came with the Jeep because it was cut and the steering wheel is stuck on. I was thinking 20" with 2" spline on either end.

I also need to figure out mounting a wheel and would like a working horn.

Thank you for all the help!

I use Borgeson products. You can build a shaft on their web site. You'll need to know the diameter and spline count of the column and steering box. Then select "U" joints and double D shaft length. Good luck Ron

The OEM steering shaft universal is much longer than most aftermarket universals. The length of the universal installed will affect the required length of the steering shaft and also the required length of the intermediate steer shaft.
    72-75 Column shaft = 34-3/4”
    72-75 Intermediate shaft 30”
    72-75 Universal 5-1/2”

Not sure how a post 1975 body tub will effect your choice of steering components.

    Edited previous post for clarity.
I had a 76 column shaft and the associated collapsible double “D” intermediate shaft (column to Saginaw)
It’s a completely different setup and uses a different steer wheel. Nothing except the Saginaw box will direct interchange between Intermefiate CJ and Late CJ steering systems.
