Just had a situation with my in-tank fuel filter getting clogged ('57 CJ5). After I back-blew it, it cleared but soon blocked again.

I drained some sediment at the tank drain. Then I also put a donut shape magnet down in the tank, with a piece of stiff wire I can retrieve from the filler neck.

Once a day I am pulling it out and disposing of the rust particles it collects. No more clogged filter!

    Anyone else tried this?

    Two points-

    - Most forms of rust aren't magnetic
    - If you have that much rust forming in your tank I'd say you probably should yank it & give it a rust-proofing/sealer treatment real soon.

Interesting thoughts. Guess I should say "rusty metal flakes."
The tank isn't so bad, just never been cleaned in over half a century.

PS = isn't ferric oxide the basis for 'magnetic' recording tape?

Yes it is, that's the form (magnetite, ie. "lodestone" black in colour) that *is* magnetic but it forms less commonly than the non-magnetic types (commonly hematite- the red stuff). This is why "magnetic" water cleaners to remove iron from water supplies are a scam- most iron oxide in water is in the form of hematite.

Please avoid subjects about Jeep tanks, fuel gauge, etc... It makes me sick.
I know the problems and I know that it is a delicate matter.
You shold buy a new one!

I repaired it many times, but I was twice with an empty fuel tank, and it was each time with my wife, by chance in the village.
