    1956 CJ5, 6 volt negative ground...

I'm having some issues troubleshooting my taillight/brake lights and was hoping someone on the site might be able to provide some assistance.

Previous owner(s) started to install a turn signal set up using a black plastic model with no name or maker that I can find. The control that mounts on the column is not connected and I am not interesting in turn signals at this point BUT I do want the tail lights and brake lights to function.

The harness to the rear of the jeep has six (6) wires: red, green, yellow, white, black, brown.

Currently (per the previous owner's set up) the tail lights work with the brown wire from the harness connected to the red wire from the light assembly. The brown wire from the light assembly is not connected to anything.

Keeping the connection as mentioned above, I cannot connect the brown wire from the light assembly to any of the remaining five wires from the harness to get the brake lights to work.

I'm trying to ascertain if the brake light switch itself is bad or if I should try to bypass the existing "signal harness" and go directly to the tail lights.

The two wires from the brake light switch switch go to the turn signal "box" on the firewall that the PO(s) installed and into the harness (some of which appears to be original) to the instrument cluster, etc.

I should mention that headlights and parking/marker lights up front work fine.

Can I bypass the aftermarket signal stuff and go directly to the taillights? If so, what would you all recommend? OR, should I bit the bullet and get a new harness from Walcks and rewire the entire thing? Instrument cluster appears to work properly.

Have read over the various articles on the tech resource page that might apply.

Again not concerned with turn signals and flashers at this point.

Sorry in advance for the rambling post, it's been a frustrating afternoon of trying to figure this out.

Easiest/simplest/fastest/cheapest is just to connect the brake light switch directly to the brake lights.

Yes, from the factory the stop light circuit should not connect to anything in the cluster, only to the to the turn signal switch. The stop switch does get it's power from the light switch, that may be what you're seeing.

Simply connect the other side of the switch to the wires running to the left & right rear lights.

Tail light . light switch to all lights front and rear Brown
not using signal switch for the mechanical switching between signal and brake
as howard said . brake switch gets it's power from light switch . terminal 12V hot
should have a fuse before brake switch . just for safety
RT/stop brake switch to light Green
LT/stop brake switch to light Yellow
tie green and yellow and what ever wire coming from brake switch . simple

thanks guys - I'll dig in again tomorrow. I didn't have these issues when re-doing my 3A and M38 (did these years ago) and this one is a bit frustrating.

You cannot just hook some of the wring up through the spartan clone signal. Its all or nothing or its just not going to work right. As howard said, you can connect directly to the brake switch to run your brake lights.

Its not really hard to wire up your spartan clone though. Any spartan style wiring diagram will mostly work.
