V6 Prestolite Distributor?

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by vanguard, Feb 19, 2005.

  1. Based on my search I believe this is a Dauntless Prestolite distributor. I'm looking for confirmation. Picked it up on eBay almost a year ago and now its almost time to make use of it. The rebuilders sticker on the vacuum advance says it was rebuilt 4 February 1974 . :D

It does look familiar to a presto. Is there any sort of Model # on it?

Looks like a Delco to me. Doesn't it have the allen screw to adjust the dwell thru the window on the cap?

Sorry to barge in here but if someone has a spare of each, it would be great if a pic was posted somewhere so we could tell the difference. I would like to know which one I have as well. :v6:

I stand (actually, sit) corrected...it does look like a Delco. It's got the 2 cap lock stops on the housing.

$ sink: No pic handy, but maybe a couple observations from my experiences might help. The Prestolite should have 2 clips that hold the cap on. Those are a PITA b/c they're infamous for popping off going over RR tracks & rough terrain. Delco caps require a screwdriver to remove the cap via spring-loaded cap screws, that lock down on the 2 cast slots in the pic above (on underside). Also the Presto dist. hold-down clamp looks like a rocker arm whereas the Delco's looks like a wishbone. HTH

Thanks that was clear enough, I have clips to hold the cap on and my hold down looks like a rocker arm to hold it down. Prestolite it is then :stout:

I can snap a pic of my prestotrash if you need it Joel. I'm headed down to the garage in a bit anyhow.

BTW there are/were several models very similar to what came on the dauntless. Why bother w/ that lump of ****. HEI would be a much better option for you IMHO. Need one? :D

  9. Please Brad!

This lump fits nicely into the budget (already paid for)! I have a Mallory Dual Point but it needs a cap and rotor too (more expensive) and something isn't right with the clips that hold the cap on it. So I'll save that for later.

Besides I've done all right with points in the hurricane so far! :D

Ok. I'm need to get the rack-o-ribs on the grill and I'll go back down and get a top side pic. I need to figger out what is wrong w/ my timing anyhow. I bet you a  the rotor is broke again.

I just took a re-visit on the whole Ren I thing. At least I know my frame boxing isn't just a very good PO thing. See the Ren I thread for more. . .

Thats definately not a prestolite. Prestolite distributors have a cast iron body not aluminum.
    Sorry about the lump Joel.:D

Do I need to go down there again Joel? The only other dist. I have is an HEI and it is burried under alot of really sweet JEEP parts somewhere in my shop.

    Hiya Mike! :D

  13. Put a few ribs on for me!

  14. No don't go down there Brad!

The rack is too big to fit in any pan. Now what'll I do to soak them in

    Oh the humanity!

I'm not going back down to the garage then. I'd hate to be accused of getting garage time. I have a reputation to keep up ya know. :D R)

  16. Thanks Mike and Patrick! From what I've read its better to have the delco anyway. I hope to go get a cap and rotor for it later today at the big NAPA.

Not so quick Mike. This is not conclusive but I have Prestolite that came off of my CJ and a spare that looks just like it but is cast aluminum. Is it possible that both types were made by Prestolite? Incidently, the distributors mentioned above are not the same as the pic Vanguard posted. The main difference being the weights on mine are not on top. Other than that, it looks very similar. I'll post a picture of it if anybody wants to see it.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

the most common delco dist for V6 is 1110376 (stamped into housing rim)
    1110376 and 1110342 were used with 2G 2bbl
    1110322 used with 1bbl
1110376 uses a differcant cap than the others
one diff is the position of the window for point/dwell adjustment
    rotors are the same
    common Prestolite numbers are: IAT-4501, IAT-4502, IAT-4502A
caps and rotors all interchange as well as points for these
seems to me James P. E. had more info on all this
as mentioned previously, Delco has the never changing push down/turn screwdriver type clamps
Prestos have the 2 spring clips for cap retention
the Presto housing differences are interesting
    mine is steel
