This is refreshing to hear. Does it need to be a specific year of Land Cruiser to make sure that I get the right starter. And it dosent matter what year my jeep is as long as it has the F134 motor.

    I think it is 64-82. Any f-head.

I looked at O'reiles(Checker Auto) and the part number is the same but it is made by Autolite. They look identical and for the price I took the chance and ordered it. I'll keep everyone up to date on how the install goes.

I finally got around to installing the Toyota starter, mostly because I let it sit there and didn't think they'd take it back. :) (Actually, I think they told me 30 days on a return and I've been a little busy.)

The trick, as noted earlier in this thread, is to elongate the upper hole and use a smaller (7/16") bolt for the lower hole. Pretty amazing. Cranks like a real starter. R)

After pricing out starters for my '65 I decided to take the chance and ordered one through O'Reillys also. Despite having to have it shipped because the nearest O'Reillys is a hike with shipping and the core charge it still came out a LOT cheaper then locally at AutoZone or Advance. The top bolt can be a bit of a problem as stated by some others on other forums but its well worth the trouble to save on the cost of a 'Willys' starter.

Did the starter swap myself last night. Bolted right up. Had to do a little changing on my wiring to hook up to the spade on the solenoid. Cost was $49.99 with a $4.50 core charge. Cranks good and smooth now. Thank you all for the tech help, really saved some dough!

Could this be done on an L134 if you used the bellhousing and flywheel for an F134?

alright, read through the posts, i know they offer the gear reduction, or standard, and everyone here used the standard that i read, unless i missed something... doesnt gear reduction spin faster? or does that not have enough torque for these old engines? and prone to burnout faster? just wondering why no one has used the gear reduction.. thanks for any input!

page 3 post #29 says gear reduction unit is almost twice the price of the standard. it seems the orig starter could be rebuilt for that much...
i tried a pro start 16224 from pep boys for the same toyota application but it would have required what i considered "excessive grinding" after reading the posts here. i'm hoping the ultima 16224 has a slightly different base shape.

I used the standard starter because it was relatively inexpensive. The only limiting factor to using a gear reduction starter would be resistance, like with increased compression. I don't think that's a factor with an F-head. ;)

The little gear reduction(if it fits) will have way more power than the standard starter and be twice as reiable. This starter is very similar to the starter used on very hard to start race cars and hot rod V8's

completed mine tonite, works very well. keyed in great, and 5 minutes by hand with a round file was all the ultima starter required to fit the orig. top bolt in. i used a 3/8 bolt for the lower hole. the prostart from pepboys would have required considerably more alterations even though they were both #16224 for the same application:)

You can use a starter from a 1964 thru 1983 Toyota Landcruiser 4.2L. Nippondenso Part number 02800-2362/4.
O'reillys Auto Parts sells it under Ultima Part # 16224
You can also find it under a Lester rebuilt # 16224
Or you can find it under an ACE rebuilt # 649

i got the ultima #16224 for $58.80 no core charge

Mine bolted right up, no need to fiddle with anything.
It'll be a whila before I actually try and start it, lack of all wiring puts a crimp in turning a key.

OK, Uncle Bill, what did you do with that loose green wire?

Is the small green one on the left the ignition wire, correct?

    Thanks,

And with your screen name being Uncle Bill, shouldn't the Slug be named Sluggo? (SNL).....
