Barely any egging out is neccessary on the top hole. 1/16" will get you there. But, I can't stress enough, get an Allen head bolt for the top!

Just an update; the part numbers above are discontinued or back-ordered in most part stores. I was successful ordering through Summit Racing, part number ADO3361262. Minor mods, works great.

Not a fan of amazon for parts. Iffy returns if necessary. Found that a button head worked for me. Easy start and tighten with a long ball hex socket.

Take the upper bolt from your old starter and match the thread up to one that will use an allen head instead. The room is very tight for a normal socket or wrench.

Something like this.--- not this size---

    Hi,

After reading this thread and shopping around, I decided to get my old original starter rebuilt locally... couple of reasons.

Since the rebuild or replica starter are not readily available in Canada, ordering one from the US would cost "price US$ + Exchange rate + shipping + Duties + Tax so a $300 USD starter often end up been $500CND or more so the Toyota starter was looking pretty good at that point. I price them up in my area and they ranged from $114 - $140 CND (then you add tax 15% plus shipping). My 1966 F134 Jeep is 100% original so my preference was to keep it original, if possible but not "at all cost". So I shop around in my city and found an old timer that own a starter and alternator shop. I got him to rebuild my original starter for $200 CND + tax. More expensive than the Toyota starter but I couldn't be happier and I didn't have to fight with the bolts and wires during installation and it may me feel good to spend my money locally.

He replaced the Bendix, solder new brushes, clean out the armature, new solenoid, replace all the bolts, nuts and bushings and painted it black. He had a big smile on him when I went and pick up the starter... obviously it took him back to memory lane.

I suggest that you look around your area, and you may find someone that could use the income if not then obviously the Toyota would be a good option.

    Way to go.

A couple of years ago I did the same with the original starter on my '34 Ford. Like having a whole new car.

And helping to keep the old skills alive.

Hello new friends, This is actually my first post on this site- even though I've been lurking for several months. I picked up my old CJ-5 last summer and have found this forum to be a treasure trove of good info! Well, after I decided I needed to replace my starter I found this thread and decided I'd give the Toyota starter a try. I made a video of it and hung it on my YouTube channel if you want to check it out:
(or, search YouTube for Bad Hombre Garage Episode 87). Thanks for all of your info! It works great. I hope this can help someone else.

Cool! First post. Welcome from Boston.

I have this battery checker, which works much better than a voltage reading for that purpose. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IZFNJ6Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

But also, it should be noted for any Canadian reading through this that duty fees are not charged on auto parts from the US - just GST; per NAFTA (or whatever the new free trade agreement is now called).
If a shipping company wants to charge an arm and a leg for brokerage or duties, just self declare it through Customs or have the parts shipped through US Postal Services.

I’ve seen these on numerous Japanese industrial engines. I bet there are other applications. Maybe even a less expensive part number.
Just found my PO installed one and obviously couldn’t catch the upper bolt so just left it out. Couldn’t get away with that with the OEM starter huh. Good for you though glad it worked.

  18. so, i've broken a couple of bendixes on my original starter (one the original the other an omix piece of junk) and i've wondered about going this route. does this seem like the way to go, or just get a NOS bendix for my original starter and use it? starter turns over fine, i just don't want to keep replacing stuff. the NOS bendix ad this are about the same price.

16224 $47 with free shipping on Amazon and no core charge. Great option for 95% out there with no local option for a rebuild.
