How warm should my overdrive get?

    Is it possible to overfill the trans/transfer case/overdrive and cause damage?

    Not as long as you have a vent - that only allows the excess to spray all over the bottom of the tub and any other parts. Be sure to drive dusty roads to coat the oil and make it less flammable...

    YMMV :D - Yes, I've done that.

  5. If I have an elbow with a hose and a cap running through the tub to let me fill the t case from inside the cab will the hose actually work as a sight glass due to it having a sealed cap? I didn't know if there would be a vacuum preventing the fluid level from changing inside the hose. Most sight glasses I have seen have been open on both ends allowing the fluid to flow freely...

    Don't forget there is a vent on top of the t-case so air would be forced out. If any concern at all put a vent on the clear fill hose also. I at first misinterpreted the question so yeah don't cap it just make it a vent.

  7. A vented cap is a good idea....as long as dust/dirt/water stays out. Water could be a concern because my jeep sees a lot of rain when the top is off and I hose it out frequently.

    Make a 180 degree elbow so it points straight down. On mine I did something a bit different. I came out of the vent on top with a straight pipe nipple and it vents inside and I fill/top off the t-case through there and just check with the top fill plug. I do like the sight glass idea even better than what I have set up.
     
  9. I went to Lowes and got all the parts I need to make my under seat fill tube/sightglass. I will post some pictures once its together... It should be super easy. Now I just have to fix my leaks on the d-18. It is leaking from the shift rail caps. uuuhg!

    Just FYI - it will ALWAYS find a place to leak, even if its just a touch... its way of telling you - 'Hey, dummy, I'm a jeep - kinda like a tractor - not a show car'... at least I'm sure that is what all of mine have told me :D

    As much as my 3B has "Marked it's terratory" out in the street. I'm surprised any other vehicle would ever pull in there.
    I fill every gear case, axles, etc once a year. Perhaps 1 1/2 pint total. Someday, I need to fix that PTO drive.
     
  12. Yeah im finding out quickly that my 18 bleeds a lot more than my 20 ever did. Now it appears to be leaking out of the splines on the rear output.....I even coated them wit rvt before I put the yoke on. Bummer. I don't mind drips in the garage but with the OD on there it makes me more concerned about keeping the fluid up.

    One leak source from a D18 I have never been able to seal is the speedo drive adapter. There just isn't any apparent sealing provision in the design of that, and it is right at the fill level of the Tcase.

  14. That is actually the one place my d18 isn't leaking from.....yet! :) Here are some shots of my ghetto in cab t-case filler/sight glass setup. The puddle is from about 6 weeks of being parked in the exact same spot.... and some leaked out while I was changing fittings. I still cant really see where the bulk of the oil is leaking from... I wiped everything down and will look in the morning. I just have a bolt plugging the line for now But I plan on machining some sort of vented cap for it. also....If anyone is bored and has a minute... crawl under you jeep and feel/IR gun your overdrive next time you have been out for a ride. Just to ease my conscience. Mine is warm but not so hot you cant hold your hand on it.... My temp gun is telling me 110-125 depending on where I shoot it. I know the oil level is good and I know the oil scoop was installed, I'm just paranoid/anal about it i guess. Thanks!

    This is a great idea. Mine stopped leaking after I bought a new yoke, seals and RTVed the splines of the yoke. Maybe its just run out of oil too:rofl:
     
  16. Yea I guess as long as it is leaking I know it has oil in it. haha It appears as though all my leaking is coming form the rear output and the rail caps. So i guess I will may have to pull that and in investigate... I don't mind leaving drips hear and there but this is excessive. Does anyone know if a dana20 yoke fits? it slides on but the dust shield is different.... Also 47v6, where did you get your new yoke from? Mine didnt have a groove wore in it, but it did have some very minor pitting from sitting. I chucked it in the lathe and tried to polish it before I installed it but maybe that is where the oil is coming from????

    I just bought the cheapest Omix Ada one. Mine didn't have a groove that was too bad, but did have some pitting. It leaked BAD.

    It's show it way too full. It should be full at the bottom of the fill hole. Your show about two (2) inchs too high.
     
  19. I added extra to help lube the od and make up for any lost fluid. The camera angle also makes it look more full than it actually is... Earlier in this thread we were talking about lifting the passenger side up to allow the case to be "overfilled" I think a lot of people are doing this. My 18 leaked just as bad before I overfilled it. :)
     
  20. Ok, so I got a new d18 seal set My plan is to put a new rear output seal in. I also want to recoat the preload shims... Is there a trick to this? I am getting a lot of oil from there. I used the copper spray. I also looked at my yoke. The spot where the seal rides is a different color but I cant feel it with my fingernail.. I have a parts 18 in the garage I will pull the yoke and see if it is any better. What do you guys think about the one I am using now? Also....does a d20 yoke work? I also pulled my overdrive. I wanted to make sure everything was ok with it... Yes...the oil scoop was in place and everything looked fine. The oil looked great too. No glitter in the oil! The syncro looked good. The only thing I noticed was that there was a small groove on the Alum. syncro dog part. It is from the planetary rubbing.... I used a depth mic on the planetary as per the instructions it was .015 over so I wonder if that was the problem. There are no marks or signs of heat on the planetary where it is rubbing. Is this serious enough to worry about? if so, What should I do? I like how the instructions say it has to be .677 but they don't tell you what to do if it is not within specs. Lock washer and snap ring on the planetary are in place and torqued so I doubt the planetary walked out. Any advice would be appreciated....on both the oil leaks and the overdrive .Thanks!
