Cork gasket sealer

What sealer would you use on cork gaskets? I pulled the oil pan off a motor I was painting because I heard a noise in it when I turned it over on the stand. It turned out to be the timing gear teeth were worn. Now I am going to put it back together. I am skeptical about using silicone on the cork gasket. Should I use Permatex Aviation form-a-gasket? I have used it the past on cork gaskets.

none.. The purpose of the gasket is to absorb and expand.. sealants defeat that..

 

Both sound right to me, Hi Tack would hold them in place, but I have always felt that they were designed to seal themselves. I have used silicone on one side to hold the gasket to the valve cover when you pull it to adjust the valves, but they sometimes come off anyway. Thanks for the help.

 

3 or 4 dabs of hi tack to hold it, not glue the entire thing down. That would make it a PITA to remove later on. As was stated, gaskets require no sealant as they are the seal. If they require sealant, there is a problem with the surface or the gasket. I have used RTV to seal all manner of things, but RTV is not the proper thing to use on older vehicles. I still use it when i have to or when the sealing surfaces are FUBARD. Overtightening can cause gaskets to fail and in the case of valve covers, deform the covers themselves.

TLDR/ use 3 or 4 dabs of hijack to glue gaskets into place then assemble.

I actually never use cork gaskets because i have had issues. come to think of it, i haven't even been supplied a cork gasket in years. when i make a gasket I use some gasket maker. Comes in a roll, is grey and looks like the old stuff with asbestos in it.

The biggest issue I see with most sealers is folks trying to use the wrong sealer in the wrong application (there is a label for that folks!) or overuse (using way too much).

 

I bought a gasket set from Advanced Auto Parts and it has cork gaskets in it.

 

I have always used Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket on both sides of cork and paper gaskets. Right or wrong, it has always served me well. Never use silicone in addition to a gasket as it will be a guaranteed leak.

 

Well, a couple hundred transmissions and transfer cases Ive rebuilt, not to mention uncounted numbers of cars I've worked on would disagree with this, but whatever works for you.

 

When my Harley was new, I changed the oil at 50 miles and used silcone on the drain plug. The dealer told me I had "voided the warranty." Said it could block an oil passage.

 

That's because the average joe uses too much or in the wrong application, just like I said above. I never use it on drain plugs. Wrong application. There are late model vehicles that don't even use gaskets on things like oil pans, transmission case halves, etc. Guess what they use? Yup, sealer only. But again, the right product in the right application.

 

I have used Indian Head Shellac or Gaskacinch. One one side only.

 

The right product in the right application. Sometimes a gasket with some RTV is the only way to seal whatever it is up. I have seem people get really mad about RTV on hubs behind the locking hub, but if the surface has been hit with a hammer, a gasket just isn't going to cut it. Same goes for an oil pan or a differential cover. sometimes just like brylcream, "a little dab'll do ya".

 

I usually try to avoid cork gaskets, but if it is what you have I would put a thin layer of Black RTV on both sides. It will help seal any imperfections you have in the oil pan rails that wouldn't get sealed with a simple cork gasket.

 

I've always been told to use either RTV sealant by itself OR a gasket with gasket sealant but never both. Just going by what I was told but maybe I was told wrong. Sorry for the misinformation.

 

It's all good. If it works for you with no RTV then that's great!

 

This. Except valve cover gaskets and side cover gaskets that need to be removed for valve adjustments then I just do the side that faces the removable sheet metal cover.
