Vaseline as a prelube?

    Hey guys,

I've heard that you can use Vaseline as an assembly lube. Here's the specific question....When I change out my rear main seal, can I use Vaseline on the crank bearings and seal instead of engine oil? The thinking is that the Vaseline will "stay put" better and not get all over the surfaces that I need to seal with RTV. Any thoughts?

    TIA

Federal mogul makes an assembly lube that is thick and is designed for assembly of parts.

I used vaseline and KY once to prime an oil pump. worked fine.

I've used STP oil treatment, straight from the can. Real assembly lube is likely better.

Vaseline may work, maybe not... I wouldn't chance it on hearsay.

For AMC V8s, the FSM recommends packing the oil pump with vaseline to prevent cavitation at startup. Many use a preoiler instead.

I did to, and Its works fine for that but you don't use it on engine bearings, cams, and general assembly of engine parts and such.

There's a bad joke in there somewhere.... ;) Anyhow, I'll either pick up some assembly lube or STP treatment and use that. Thanks for the info...

    Aargh!

Let's turn this into a multiple choice question.

If I was spending all that money to do a quality rebuild on my engine, what pre-lube would I use?

    A) Vaseline
    B) Vicks Vapo-rub
    C) K-Y Jelly
    D) Knuckle Pudding
    E) Federal Mogul engine assembly lube

Vaseline clogs up oil filters when it cools there. I say no to using it on internal engine parts. Use a good assembly lube.... And where the Heck did the whole Idea of KY come from? And I thought I was warped.

Wells lets see... option C is water based so I wouldn't use that. and as for option D if you can produce enough of that to prelube an engine you should consider new career in adult films! R)
