The VIN on my Commando is 8705F1760933. The title says 1970 for year and UP for body style, which I'm assuming is pickup since it's an open body?

Here's the rub. My insurance company is having problems putting it into their system because the VIN comes up as a 1978 Ford Mustang. Not just any crappy Ford, but one of those super-awesome Mustang IIs that Chris from Charlie's Angels drove. You know the one. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little...

Anyone have this VIN confusion happen to them before?

No sure what the UP on your title indicates but yours by the 5th digit is a Station Wagon. A Half Cab would be an H, a Roadster or open body would be an O.
Only heard of one other that came up as anything other than a Jeepster but that's because the PO had the title from a Wagoneer and had it registered as a Jeepster with the Wagoneer VIN

Why does my front grill look like it came from a CJ and not a Commando?

Because someone probably couldn't find a Jeepster front clip. That's kind of a common occurrence since it's direct a bolt on.

I am no expert but it looks like original paint. This dosent look like something somebody added after the fact.

Well, I can guarantee you 100% it's not original ;). No side markers in the fenders as well as front dump exhaust tell me it's at the latest a very very early 70. If the vent cable is mounted on the bottom of the dash on the right side of the steering column that would make it a 69 at the latest.

Does the font clip also contain the fire wall. This also makes me worried since I feel so ignorant on the fact that I have no clue how to tell what parts this commando consist of. How do I know what parts to get. Thanks for pointing out the front clip issue, because I much prefer the look of a early commando grill.

No, the firewall is part of the body. The fenders are Jeepster as they were the only ones that had that little dog leg at the bottom to match up with the rocker. You'll only need the grille and the hood. A 69/71 would be the best choice as they have the safety catch to prevent the hood from flying open should the hood hold downs fail which may be the reason it's got the CJ hood and grille.

Hmmm, my 69 doesn't have the catch for the hood.
Brown at least still has the fan shroud.
Yes, early CJ5 hood, has the cut out on passenger side.
Correct fenders but I don't see the holes where the wings would have bolted in from the grille.
Somebody must have gone to some effort to make this work.

Mid/late 69 for the safety latch. The safety latch may have preceded the park light change.

Based on others posted in this thread, I'd say 1969.

  17. I agree with JustEnos, appears to be a 1969. That is the steering box I see at the bottom of the firewall correct? My 69 is like that it also has the tell-tale forward dump exhaust manifold. Trusty, my 71, has "normal" exhaust manifolds (both dump at rear) and the gearbox is right behind the front bumper.

Just an update. The fenders, grill and hood were from a CJ5. All that is removed now due to this turning into a can of worms. Wanting a simple project, that has now turned into almost a frame up refurb.

Wouldn't be a Jeepster project if it didn't turn into a can of worms at some point :).
