Toyota Starter on F134...fact!

I don't understand. Bendix is an easy fix and inexpensive.

Im excited to hear the results...the FJ starter in mine sits untested and im a little nervous to turn the key...when the time comes

 

The starter that I recommend is the #16828N - this fits the '82-'92 Toyota Land Cruiser and is a "DENSO" type offset gear reduction starter. It has a 1.0 KW rated motor and is superior in performance and reliability to the '62 - '82 Land Cruiser #16224 "Hitachi" direct drive model and vastly superior to the OEM Willys starter. RockAuto has them brand new for $84 and the factory rebuilt is only $5 less. Installation and modifications required are the same for either Land Cruiser model.

i used Starter #16224 from a Toyota. Easy peasy install. For sanity sake, I highly suggest an Allen head bolt to replace the stock bolt on top. here is mine installed. spun a motor to starting after it had been sitting for 20+ years. i paid 64 bucks for from a FLAPS in January. ive had the same one in my '70 now for about 10 years. havent had any issues with it. the day i do, i cna get one off the shelf locally.

 

I think I will be doing this mod to my jeep. I'm getting tired of the mechanical foot starter on Ted. Key start would be sooooooo nice. What starter does Kaiser Willys sell? Is it a Toyota starter? It seems to be stupid expensive there.

starter 16224 was the first thing I did to my old cj5, now wrecked, to get it going after unknown years sitting in barn. Little hole wallowing out for bolts and works great. If I didn't screw it up, its gotta be foolproof.

 

I did this for my 65 CJ. I got the starter from Advance Auto Parts. It was a Carquest part# 16224s. I had to ream out the bolt holes a little bit but I got it to fit. The top bolt was a pain and I couldn’t get my 3/4 socket off so it had a new home. It worked great all last summer but now I can’t get the starter to engage. I’m going to see if I’m still eligible for warranty but if not I’ll just get another one. The teeth on the starter gear are chewed up. There was never any grinding and the starter wasn’t loose. Has anyone else had this problem?

 

nope. ive done this upgrade to 3 jeeps with the 134 now, and had zero problems.

 

different issue for me...there IS grinding...once in a while, maybe every 15 start ups or so.
Ive been meaning to ask if anyone has experienced this and if any solutions.
I haven't run the jeep a whole lot...havnt pulled the starter to see whats up yet

 

My Jeep had a Toyota starter and it was grinding intermittently on start. When I put in a new clutch I had a new ring gear installed on the flywheel and had the original starter rebuilt. It's working fine so far. Not sure if the Toyota starter was an issue or if it was just a ring gear being worn.

 

I run a 16224 on mine as well... has been stellar.

 

No it was tight. But the other starter was still under warranty so I just got a new one and I’m going to bolt it in tomorrow. Thanks for the reply!

 

I forgot to come back with the results from my install last year. Ran a reamers through the top mounting hole and I did pick up the Allen head bolt. I have to say, if I have another F head starter problem, I would do this Toyota starter again. Worked like a charm. Even sounds better when you turn the key.

 

My starter worked fine when I bought the jeep, almost two years ago. I do not forsee a problem with it, but after reading this post and seeing how expensive KW has them I decided to do a search and look what I found! Even if I end up not needing it when I get the jeep running it is a nice back up and for that price...

I went by this post... I'm sure some hole enlargement has to be done but minimum. I hope...
