When I opened mine up one side was black, the other was light brown. I don't think any have been changed in atleast 20 years. I'm using the 80W140 syn. since I couldn't find 140 straight and adding some STP to make it sticky.

I recently put new bearings, oil seal, and gasket on my passenger side and filled it with 140, but it is somehow leaking into my drum. The shoes are getting slick, causing my driver's side to grab a lot harder than the passenger side, which isn't very fun in traffic. If I pump chassis lube in there to try and stop the leak, how do I make sure it is packed all the way into the hub? Any other suggestions?

You brought up a good point. What I was told, in order to mix 90W and brg grease, the 90W should be heated then add the grease so it mixes better.

    ttpete,

That, my friend, is very good info. That is exactly what is required. The 1000w is where I would start.

I got my hubs to quit leaking! After much investigation, I discovered that the 140W that I put in the knuckle was somehow leaking out of the bottom 2 bolts that hold the backing plate on. It was dripping down to the drum, which was slinging gear oil everywhere.

I used #2b non-hardening thread sealer on all 6 bolts, including under the head of the bolts. Now more leaks! No it appears that I can run as thin as 140W in there without leaks, although I did end up thickening it up with some chassis lube. Thanks for all the help.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Good job on the 140 weight and fixing the 'leak'!

fix it right and fix it once.

I think I'm calling "Restoration Stuff" from the above link for a couple of qts of 299w lube at $9.95/qt. That looks about a right price since Red Line goes for about the same.

    Thanks again,

I dont know if this would be the right thread for this question: On the front axle, Is there a way to drain the old lube from the steering knuckles? I noticed all the threads say how to fill and how to make the knuckle pudding (sounds like real good stuff by the way), Is there a way to drain without disassembling?

Taking one of the bolts out of the bottom of the kingpin bearing cap should let you drain what's in there, if it's thin enough to drain anyway. Of course, I haven't actually tried that.

Holy mother of all thread revivals! Think lots and lots of rags. Been awhile since we had a thorough discussion on knuckle pudding though.
