Hey all, I have done plenty of searching on this forum and google, but haven't found a good source for either Spruce Tip Green or Empire Blue.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find these paints or what the codes are for current paint manufacturers?

I am hoping to respray my jeep this spring. I am getting married next November and my current paint job (John Deere Yellow and Green) is not a fan favorite in the household. Given that, I was told that if I had it resprayed with either Spruce Tip Green or Empire Blue, then we could use the jeep to drive from the church to the reception.

This would be huge as she currently doesn't like the jeep solely because of the current paint job. haha

I had it professionally done 15 years ago, so the body work is nearly perfect aside from a few scratches. So, I think with some minimal work and scuffing, it should be ready to paint with not too much body work.

    Thanks!

I'm up visiting with family for Christmas, but when I get back tomorrow, I have original paint chips/codes, and have access to the formulas in the BASF/Diamont line of paints for mixing. Most body shops should be able to mix these colors, but it is harder to find a shop that can mix single-stage paints as used on ourJeeps. My available formulas are for base-coat/clear coat systems which I think are too glossy to look correct on restorations.

    Awesome, thank you.

I am not sure what paint will be used and it isn't going to be a full resto. I edited my original post with the explanation for first time readers. In short, I am getting married and was told that if I get it repainted, we could use it to drive from the church...

My uncle paints in his barn and used to be painter for a restoration shop back in the day. I am seeing him for Christmas tomorrow, so I can get a sense on whether he has the time to do this or not. I figured if I could figure out who I could order paint through then I could let him know and go from there.

    Thanks guys.

I saw that site (paintref.com) and the codes, but wasn't able to find those codes under the different manufacturers sites.

This is where my lack of knowledge in the painting world may be hindering my ability to find the paint. Do I just need to go to a auto paint store with those codes?

Another good internet site for research is autocolorlibrary.

A direct answer to your question, "Do I just need to go to a auto paint store with those codes?" is yes, but it's good to be armed with notes of selected vehicle of which your paint choice is from... the year and model, etc...all a part of the satisfaction and confidence of a knowledgeable selection. Your uncle will know all!

Empire Blue is code 385 and uses Ditzler number 13205. Martin Senour has it as 32Y-7815 for acrylic and 90T-4260 for synthol.

Spruce Tip Green is code 225 or 325 and uses Ditzler number 43038. Martin Senour has it as 32Y-7743 for acrylis and 90T-4099 for synthol.

Yes, you will need to go to an automotive paint store to have these colors mixed. Both Ditzler and Martin Senour are major manufactuers of automotive paint, so the formulas should be able to be crossed to othe brands locally available. Some NAPA stores still mix the Martin Senour line. All the codes I have supplied are for older single-stage paints and should be able to be crossed to modern equivalents. If I had my choice, I would stick with single-stage paints as I don't think the "wet-look" glossy finishes of base/clear look right on our old Jeeps.

    Donny, Dave, and John;

Thank you very much for the information. If I can find the time to do the body work and money to purchase the paint with a kitchen remodel happening, then this advice will most certainly come in handy. I think we have decided on Empire Blue and if I remember correctly my uncle prefers to spray with a single-stage paint.

Now to get some body filler and fix the cracks that have appeared since it was last painted in 2001.

I'm doing some research on paint options, and wanted to make sure I am asking for the right thing. I have two pictures of "actual paint chip cards" from around my year (1966), but I'm not sure where one came from (one came from @maurywhurt).

I'm looking at Presidential Red No 2 or Marlin Blue.

When plugging them into Paintref.com, I get:
    Screen Shot 2021-03-25 at 6.49.47 AM.png Screen Shot 2021-03-25 at 6.50.49 AM.png

I'm pretty sure I can get #226 from PPG. When I asked about "Marlin Blue" at Martin auto Color in Sparks, they weren't able to come up with a direct modern match.

@Keys5a - wondering if you might have any ideas where to find the Blue?

And also, what options would I have in either of these two colors to attempt to do single stage paint, instead of just getting a modern paint with base and clear? Would this approach be more expensive? I'm not doing a restoration, and this vehicle is definitely going to get muddy and have bushes run against the side of it, but I am trying wherever reasonably possible to do things "as they were."

    Thanks.

A friend of mine who has been in the auto paint and body business for over 40 years now works as a rep for Southern Auto Body. He will be painting my 67 CJ5 which we want to go back to the original "Presidential Red".

I gave him the three digit paint code off the firewall last week, he looked it up and says he said he can get the paint from his company with no problem. They have a chat option on their website, so you could just ask them about the color you want.

I’m a body shop owner/tech. Most paint shops should be able to mix that as a single stage paint as it doesn’t have a bunch of pearl or metallic in it. As far as cost goes, single stage with the catalyst, etc. tends to be a bit spendy but you’re saving labor by not having to spray clear over it. I’m going to use single stage on my “6” when I get ready to paint it. JMO

I’d be interested in knowing the brand/code you come up with.

I didn't come up with it. I just gave Don the three digit paint code off the firewall and he looked it up somewhere. If I remember to I will ask him what brand/code he found next time I talk to him.

The shop I have looking into it asked the place they source their paint from, and when they ran Kaiser Jeep 226 (PR#2) single stage PPG they said everything they came up with had lead in it. So I guess I’m wondering if there is something close in a different system like DuPont? Forgive me in advance if I’m getting some of this wrong I’m way out of my element here

    I found 93-9657H DULUX President Red #2 96578H DUCO (226) for Dupont.

Don't know about lead content, but just glad I don't live in California where it seems everything will give you cancer.

As I mentioned, a good auto paint supplier should be able to mix that even if the code showed lead. My supplier had to mix for my ‘75 and he started with a close color and kept tinting until it was right. Keep looking for someone who does custom paint matches. One other thing: I’ve never heard of automotive paint having lead in it. The only paint I know that had lead was house paint. My hubby has been in the auto body business for 40+ years and he’s never heard of that either. I’ll double check with my supplier but that just seems strange.
