1968 Cj-6 Brutus

The scrambler is an old forest service jeep and minus the two squares where the back roll bar mounts is the same rust free everything. Body lines are Lazer straight. I lucked out with that one. I've been able to find some nice 1/2 doors for it.

 

Anyone have pictures of what the correct windshield frame should look like. I'm beside myself with the internet pictures. Some say upper electric wiper holes and two different lower wiper holes with two different size glass. Pulling my hair out here. Thanks.

• Flat topped glass top wiper - up to some time in '68
• Flat topped glass bottom wiper - some time in '68 to some time in '69
• Curved top bottom wiper - some time in '69 to '75

Photos are from my earlyish '68 with top wipers, early '69 with bottom wipers, and '71 with bottom wipers and curved top glass.

 

Thanks fireball, exactly what I needed and explains why I am finding different examples of frames. Mine was a 68, flat glass with bottom wipers and standoffs on top.
The frame I bought from crown is a curved glass, bottom mount wiper. So now I'll be searching for new glass. Its a dang shame to, my original frame was in perfect shape with no rust what so ever. So I had it blasted, and I primed and painted it, Came out great. Then I mounted it on the tub and without the glass in it, noticed drivers side was pulled to the rear, by about an inch. Guess I'll make a shop mirror out of it now. Thanks again.

 

Can you tweak the frame back into place? I would think that you should be able to twist the frame enough to get it straight, if thats what you want to use. If you decide to use the new frame, just tell the shop you want glass for a 1971 cj5, they should have the dimensions on hand. It's flat glass, so they should be able to easily cut it.

I like the look of the early style top wiper frame, but there's definitely a huge improvement in visibility with the curved top glass/bottom wiper setup. You'll have to source the wiper motor and linkages to use your new frame, so consider that cost.

 

He already has the bottom mount wiper setup so he should be good to go for that. I agree that the curved top glass is a huge visibility improvement.

I'm not sure anybody reproduces the flat topped - bottom wiper frame since it was only a one-ish year thing. You could modify a top wiper frame to work by cutting holes for the bottom wipers and plugging the top wiper holes.

I also agree it's probably possible to straighten the old frame. All it takes is getting clever with a come-along. Here I am pulling the side of a hood out about an inch on the '68:

 

I had the old frame clamped to my flat deck car trailer on the straight end and attempted to place a 8 foot 4x4 in the other end and twisted it. I gave it my best shot 4 times and that freaking thing would not come back even an 1/8 of an inch. It's nice enough at some point I might see if a body shop has anything they could do, but for now, it's just jeep art. Maybe shop mirror .

 

Finally got all the windshield drama figured out and done. It's funny that sometimes what we never thought would even be a glitch, turns out to be a PITA. I'll try to get an updated picture up in a little bit. Have pics on the cell, but image to large.

 

Happens all the time. Good to hear it is not just me...well maybe I have some thing to do with it.

 

Still rolling along. Down to just a few mechanicals. One of the last things is my dang gas pedal. The 68 dauntless has its own linkage for the gas pedal and it consisted of a firewall pivot plate, arm to carb and the pedal pivoting arm that normally has the short plastic pedal. The pedal most people do not enjoy, because it's small and up high and kind of a pain.
Well I forgot mine was snapped off just above where the plastic pedal would be. When I was driving it, I just stepped on the steel rod coming through the firewall. But of course that went out to the blasters, came back, got primed and stuck in a box for later considerations. Well it's time and it was totally forgotten about, well till this week that is. Now I'm searching for a replacement and or using the same pedal as my 70 had. That nice big pedal that pivoted on two ball studs in the floor with a big jeep logo in it. That was a much better set up in mho.

Been getting after the wiring harness the last couple of days. With a little luck, should be done Monday. Bought a harness from Jeepster man a year or so ago and I'm real happy with the quality and accuracy. Only wish in the instruction sheet, the person filling in some detail specifics about my CJ6, wrote in bigger letters so I could make out what they wrote.

 

Note: There is an S-shaped piece of metal to go along with the pedal and ball pivots. The purpose seems to be for the flap on the pedal to rest on. It would be pretty easy to fab. You can see it here on my '71 (pedal flap is missing):

 

I didn't have that part on my 70. Never saw that piece before. Interesting.
