Hello and thanks for taking time to read this.

My CJ5 will never be a rock crawler, and as a senior citizen I would like to see if there are ways to lower it a bit to ease getting in and out, I've done the steering column and seat modifications, and am satisfied with leg room improvements, but if the threshold were a bit lower it would make getting in a bit easier.

I know most Jeeps go up not down, are there lowering blocks for this era CJ5?

    Thank you!

I'm not aware of any presently but those would be really easy to make. There should be a Willys/Kaiser part number for them as they were a dealer warranty cure for the dreaded Jeep lean.

What do you have currently? It's easy to assume you have a stock rig but if you don't then our suggestions don't really apply.

If it is stock then how many leaves does it have on each corner?

A stock cj should be 24" from the load floor of the bed to the ground.

Not something I’d really recommend, but I talked to the owner of this jeep. Apparently his uncle was the original owner and used it as a hunting rig. He cut out the sides by the footwells to make it easier to get in and out of.

A picture of the driver's side would tell us a lot about what you currently have.

I am a "senior citizen" myself. Due to a bad right knee the side steps on my CJ5 were a big help in mounting up.

If you want lowering blocks they shouldn't be difficult to fabricate, or you may be able to find some made for some other vehicle with leaf springs under the axle.

A quick Google search brought up lots of hits, one linked below.

A set of stock style steps would make entry a lot easier, and no suspension modification!

Since I had my knee replacement last Spring I don't need the steps on the CJ5 so removed them in favor of some rock sliders I bought from a fellow forum member.

Thank Duffer and Oldpappy, I'm not looking to add steps, the info on the lowering blocks is what I had in mind, especially the steel ones

1.75" x 4 x 1 with a 5/16" center hole would be the block spec. You could also find flatter springs or remove leaves in a uniform cull.
Thinner body mounts (rubber washers instead of pucks)
Lower air pressure in the tires.

The postal crowd seem to be able to put thetub on the ground.
If you want to go wild you could run an air bag suspension or air shocks with under rated spring pack.

Folding one step on a lanyard. Probably needs no explanation, just in case here it is...
Take the one step out of the CJ, put the one step on the ground, climb in, pull the one step up in to the CJ with the lanyard. Not my idea, I saw a small framed woman towing a 5th wheel horse trailer in a dually do it. How cool is that. Simple, effective, cheap.

Steps would be more beneficial than lowering blocks. You couldn't lower it enough to get the same benefit as steps.

I'm thinking if you take a stock height CJ and put 4" blocks on it, you're not going to have much suspension travel. The axle is gonna be getting real close to the frame.

Good point. Also the tires are going to be stuffed into the wheel wells with any suspension travel. Steps would be a much better fix.
