    Jim, maybe double blue tape the areas that the jigsaw will see so it don't mar the alum,, to make a nicer cut and run the saw on a clamped straight edge. just trying to keep your 6 looking so good ,if it was mine,,,,,,,,,,, I'd use a skill saw on that . then a little Mothers polish or Wenol and blind them senseless.if you don't go with the polished look ,maybe old skool ,scotch bright ,disc swirl .


    those suckers will get hot though ,,,,,,alum is a great heat sink

    yea thinking I could cut the long straight sections with my wormdrive then finish up the curved areas with the jig saw.....figure I'll polish them up to start.
    Good advice on the tape, probably use some newspaper as well

    with the skill saw , eye gouging chips of alum will be everywhere ,,,,,always wear protection......a friendly service reminder.

    Actually, those suckers won't get very hot, compared to other materials, because aluminum is a great heat sink.;)

    I've got a friend that used a plasma cutter on some thin aluminum diamond plate. It worked extremely well.

    I cut the door skins out useing a jig saw with a metal blade. Covering the aluminum with newspaper and tape worked great to protect it from scratches. I used a flap wheel on my 4" grinder to smooth and finish the edges

    After drilling out all the holes I used button head stainless bolts to secure the skins to the frames

    they work great, guess the biggest worry will be them getting stolen :rofl:......I'd like to figure out a way to mount a cup holder and maybe a storage pocket to the inside, future project :)

    edit......I ran out of mothers polish so I'll work on shining them up more when I can pick up somemore

    leaving for a 4 day jeep trek in 10 days so decided to make my jerry can racks. I didn't want to spend a lot on these so I used materials I had on hand. I started with some electricians strut

    I cut it down so I ended up with a U shape w/ 3/4" returns. I notched it at the end and welded some half inch angle that the bottom of the can would sit in

    I welded a threaded union at the top so I'd have a means of tightening it down

    I made a angled hold down and bent a bolt to secure to the union
    [​IMG]
    the supports for my rack are angled a bit so I notched them at the bottom and fitted the can rack into them to get the whole setup level and straight

    just need to finish painting and I'll have one more project scratched from the list!......I had to buy the threaded unions and the 5/16"x5" bolts, grand total into the project....$4 and change :)

    I know a lot of people do the gerry can thing. I look at it like you are strapping a couple of potential bombs on the side of your Jeep. I met a guy on a Rubicon trail maint. project who was lucky to escape with his life. He was down in the SoCal desert and had the shoulder give way on a cut road. He rolled off the side several times, the gerry can was crushed and sent a spray of fuel everywhere. Just something to be aware of, not trying to rain on anyones parade.

    jim don't let the bottom lip of the can be supported by the angle iron it will rub a hole in it in a hurry .use a piece of heater hose or something rubber make contact with the can.

    I remember you saying that :(....if I'm not carrying it there then its inside the tub....not sure there's a good choice, what would be my options?, or is there a way to make my setup better?

    the lip sits on the angle, but the angle doesn't make contact with the bottom of the can.......that should work, correct?

    Just be cautious. How much extra gas do you really need? If yoou are camped for a few days, leave the cans in camp and re-fill you tank when in camp. I wouldn't carry them on any gnarly trail where there is a chance of rolling. And really, I'd bet that most rollovers are pretty un-expected anyway. People have been using cans mounted like yours for many years, I just think you should be aware of the risks. It's really the lack of protection for the cans that creates the problem.

    piece of hose on it is cheap insurance plus it stops some of the rattles they will make hanging there
