Factory options for tire size 1960 cj-5

Hello.

In our 1960 CJ-5 we have 7.00*15 tires. Those tires are totaly dry and we must get a new set.
It is impossible to find new tires in that size, all you can get is metric (215/75/15 , 235/75/15 and so...).

According to the local laws here, it is forbiden to change your tires size, unless you provide some "factory" data sheets about "original" options.
All i am looking for is some "factory" or "official" papers which propose other tire size.
In the Mechanics Manual (1956) i have, they say 6.00*16, so it doesnt help me at all.
Any help to locate some original options will be great.

(I searched the forum and didnt find anything right).

I have a brochure with factory optional sizes listed, I don't know if this will help you.

Sizes read:

9.00 X 13 High Flotation
7.00 X 16 6-ply All Service
7.60 X 15 Suburbanite
7.00 X 15 All Service, Studded Tread
6.00 X 16 6-ply Rib Tread
6.00 X 15 6-ply Rib Tread.

Yes. I have to show them some "official" or "factory" papers with tires metric size (in order to get a permission to change the old 7.00/15 tires).
Do you have that kind of document ?

I doubt there is such a document. Metric tire sizes weren't used in the US until the late 70s as I recall.

 

Yea. 68Buick listed, from his brochure, different, factory available options. I thought the link may have some of those original sizes available. Ziv may need to convert the original tire size to modern metric sizes to get what he wants, if they will accept that.

Walcks have them in Traction tread. Kaiser Willys Supply show a Non-Directional (military) in that size.

Others probably have similar. Or maybe get an "official" note on their letterhead from one of the suppliers to explain equivalent modern sizes.

 

What about contacting Mahindra in India and seeing if they can supply that info for you. They have been building CJ3's and derivatives since the 1950's. Also a CJ5 of some kind.

 

We will take Nick's (68BuickV6) document plus some conversion chart to the Minis. of Transp. office.

No. You cant import tires just like that

We have so many stupid laws concerning all kind of changes in cars ... just some:
In order to attach a Winch to your Jeep - you must get it installed in a professional shop and get permission. after you got it all its parts of your Jeep, so if you take it out it is not legal.
In order to get a new frame to your old Jeep, or another type of engine (F134 to V6) - you better not try.
and so on ...
or it is up to you.

There has got to be a way to import the correct size tires if they are required and not available locally - I'd be asking allot of questions of the appropriate bureaucrats.

Not knowing if you have been able to resolve this issue, I was wondering if an item your recently posted has the answer you were or are looking for. In you post "Re: New 1975 cj-6" you provided a link to the Jeep after selling it to a freind. The video shows the Jeep as it is now and it surely does not have factory tires. I am curious, does your freind know of a way for you to get the tires you need or want? How is he able to use the tires that are shown in the video? Just a thought.

 

Sometimes you can get around the law depending on where you live, by removing the tire for the vehicle and taking it to a shop to have them dismount them and take only the rim to your chosen tire store and ask they install the tire you choose, without mentioning for what vehicle or original tire size. and if that doesn't work try telling them that it's for trailer or an off road only vehicle. maybe that will work depending on what that law actually says.
