I own a 1958 CJ5 with an F134 engine number of 1T58692. The Serial number plate reads 57548 75819, and the number 75819 is stamped in the right frame rail. I do not assume that this is the orignal engine. As far as I know, the head has been replaced recently. Can anyone tell me what year engine I have in my CJ. I've told folks that it's a 1971. Am I right?

rocker pillars are made of aluminum
water outlet is also made of aluminum
    valve cover: oil filler/breather
crank case ventilation: road draft tube
    generator id: GJP 7002 11N [Auto-Lite]
    starter id: MDM 6005 10M [Auto-Lite]
    distributor id: 1AT 4008B 1H [Auto-Lite] B in number almost looks like a double strick...A then B

I think your engine has been exchanged or reworked at least. The top valve cover should not have a filler/breather in it, that was a pickup/station wagon fitment. the inlet/outlet where the thermostat goes should be cast iron. And how do you mean 'military type' for the fuel pump? The fuel pump, if original should be a dual chamber beast with the fuel on top and the vacuum (for the windshield wipers) on the bottom.

The civilian ones use a bowl on top also, don't they?

Speaking of fuel pumps...I am replacing the military pump with the correct glass filter top/ wiper chamber bottom pump. In doing so, I had to re-use the spacer from the military pump. It was the only way to get the rim of the bottom chamber to fit properly into the embossed portion on the rear of the front plate. I am assuming that the arm on the pump will be long enough to contact the off-set on the cam. I'll know more once I get to the point of firing it up and find out if fuel is making it to the carb or not. If not I may need to locate a longer arm for the pump. Does anyone have any additional in-put on this?

"If not I may need to locate a longer arm for the pump."

Try a search on this site. Pumps and spacers are an issue. Have been puzzled over before.

I made the determination last night that the front plate on my engine has a cut in it to accept the larger upper chamber of the military fuel pump. It's about an 1" X 1" 90 degree section that is missing right where the upper chamber intersects it. I can tell this is a factory stamping as I can see a nice clean parting line/shear line on the edge of the plate. This leads me to believe this engine may have once been an M38A1 engine that has been coverted to 12 volt and civilian use.
