Hi guys I have been noticing some differences between the early and late 1971 cj5's. I have a June 71 jeep. I was looking at some web pictures labeled as 71 cj5's And I see no evidence that are like mine .I this makes me think that maybe the factory made these changes late in the production year .Please see pictures as labeled. My tub has a few features that is the same as an intermediate tub.

-Hump on FireWall passenger side beside battery tray.
-rear floorboards with no ribs in some areas.

things that indicate this an early original tub.

    -drivers side heater
    -factory red paint is everywhere
-Serial number and 4 speed sticker is located on the dash looks factory original .This must be a factory 4 speed.
-Serial number plate on firewall has the original rivets.
    -has emissions sticker labeled 1971.

I am asking, if you have a late june 71 or later cj5 ,can tell me if yours has these same differences?
    Thanks Gord.

There were some V6s with close-ratio T-18s. They are scarce though.

You have the right floors (transmission hump covers) for a factory T-18. I would not depend on the shift pattern sticker - they are aftermarket.

Not surprising that a '71 would share some details with the '72, like the rear floor ribs.

The tank under the seat was added later - the '71 had a rear tank, basically the same as a '72.

Wouldn't the '71 fuel indent have had a flat piece there? Interesting that someone added the indent/recess for filler and made it look factory. Definitely doesn't look added at all. I wonder if you could order one with both tanks? I'm curious about the firewall battery tray too, I guess it's just been removed?

The fuel indent was available over the Jeep dealership parts counter, and may still be available from aftermarket sources. You just cut a hole and mount it. On my '73, I used small countersunk screws to secure the insert and skimmed the top with putty, then painted the insert with a can of touch up paint. The original part is spot welded in place, which you could easily do if you have the equipment.

I've seen a lot of them, and never seen one with both tanks from the factory. But it was a very popular modification in the day. The under-seat tank was never vapor-recovery capable, and I believe that all the rear mounted tanks were (whether it was connected or not) - so there would be some conflict there.

If you want to mount the battery on the firewall, the bracket for '76-up works well.

I have as it seems a 71, at this period it was change from Kayser to AMC, I suppose that all was not clear.

I have a 3 speed forward, 1 back, the transfer case is with 1 lever instead of 2 very often.

There is an opening for the fuel tank under the seat, but the fuel tank is at the back.

Hi regarding the 4 speed sticker. You don't think that the sticker could be original ? It looks like it was originally there.
Also I am still curious about the firewall bump beside the battery box. All of the other 1971 's I've seen don't have this.
That is interesting about the under seat fuel tank. There are "blind studs " with 10/32 nuts holding the bezel on. This would indicate the tank was added later.
