    bluesmokemonster blue-smokemonster or bluesmoke-monster?

So I bought this '58 a couple of years ago. F134, D18, T98, overdrive. The first time I check the oil level in the transmission and transfer case, the transmission was overfilled quite a bit and the transfer case was quite low. So I adjusted levels and one year later I have the same situation as before. I wasn't sure what the PO had done but now I'm sure that the oil has been "pumped" from the transfer case to the transmission. Can someone tell me if this is common or if I need to worry. If common how do I keep oil in the transfer case? Thanks for your help.

from what i gather they swap fluid between the two. mine is the opposite as my t-case is over full and tranny is low. but i guess it evens out when driving? not sure though.

The T-98 has a seal in the adapter to keep them from sharing. It's possible the seal is missing/damaged, installed backward, or the vent in the transfer case is plugged. I'd check the last first as usually the oil gets pumped from the transmission into the transfer case as noted above.

Does the T-98 share oil with the D18?

No. See post above Walt. There is a seal between them and no holes allowing oil to pass. I suspect the op has a plugged transfercase vent.

nick I was typing my post and got interrupted and by the time I posted it you had the answer already on the board. I was sure I remembered there was a seal in that adapter but at 72 I think I get hit with sometimers now and then. Oh well.

I wasn't sure if you saw it or not Walt. Sometimes it's easy to miss/skip a post. Unfortunately I'm very guilty of that.

When filling a D18 with OD you must remember that the OD takes some of the oil also.
I was told to pull the upper bolt on the OD nearest the rear shift lever output, on new ones the bolt head is red, and fill the D18 from there until it runs out of the fill hole of the D18.
This fills the OD first and then the oil runs down to fill the D18.

Thanks for the replies. I will check the transfer vent. I changed the engine mounts this weekend and took a glance at the rear mounts. They're so caked with oil and dirt it was hard to tell what was what. Hopefully that will stop the oil from moving. I'd rather not have to go to the next step.
