I have both a '69 & a '70 CJ5 Jeeps. I am taking the best of the two and making a GREAT Jeep. I have the option of going with the under the seat OR the rear fuel tank. Which is better? Installation isn't a problem with either but prefer (at this time) only one tank. I am aware of the benefits of two tanks being installed. I have only owned the under the seat in the past and have always built a server type trailer hitch with the extra space under the box in the rear so don't have any experience with owning a rear tank Jeep.

    Thanks,

The rear tank is larger so more fuel capacity. Iirc it's 15 gallons vs the 10 or so gallons in the underseat tank. The rear also removes fuel fumes from the cab. The rear tank does hang down a bit so that is a concern for some.

A rear tank can be made that holds 20+ gallons and doesn't compromise clearence. It will depend on how you set the rest of it up-one place a little body lift can be a real advantage. That rear space is pretty much wasted space unless you do put in a rear tank. Another advantage is it opens up a lot more options for mounting seats.

If I was going to move the gas tank to the rear I would do it for the gained, handy under seat storage capacity. Extra fuel capacity with the rear tank would definitely be a plus too.

I noticed an improvement in the ride quality after putting in the rear tank.

I'm going to run both. I fabbed a 17 gallon rear tank. I'm working on the skid plate/mount now.

Total capacity 27 gallons=no more running out of fuel on the trail and a space gain from the 2 jerry cans being deleted.

I still have the stock under-seat and a 15 gal rear tank in my CJ5 (26gal total) and a single 25 gal rear tank in the 3B. IMO, the single rear tank is the far superior arrangement with a whole lot less hardware required. The freed-up space in the 3B is occupied by an aux heater that has the capacity to cook you out of there but that space could be used for many other options in a space deficit disorder afflicted Jeep.
