    Hello,

This has been asked a million times but nowhere have I seen it asked based on the setup I am running. I have the following:

258 I6 with 4.0 head conversion (head conversion currently in progress)
    T-18 w/ granny low
Dana 300 (will eventually have 4:1 gears)
Full size Waggy axles (currently being rebuilt with 4.56 or 4.88 and ARB's)

I plan on using this strictly as a Sunday driver and occasional drives to and from work then have it be primary rock crawler. This will never be my daily driver and will never see speeds upwards of 50 mph. MPG is important but not "that" important if it compromises power.

My suggestion would be the Edelbrock 470 TA (Truck Avenger). Fairly easy to tune and would work well with your engine size. Works well off road also if you ever did decide to do that.

Yep, offroad is a must with Sunday driver and occasional (once a month) work commutes.

Oops, you're right. The neat thing about the TA is it is basically set up for off road use out of the box.

The TA will run rich out of the box on your 258, but is a very good carb once you get it tuned.

My Sunday driving carb of choice is still MC2100.

So.... MC2100 vs Holley 470 vs Weber 38.... back where I started ;)

I like the MC2100 but honestly it is on the bottom of my list of three for rock crawling purposes. If it were just a daily driver then that would be my set up (or the Weber 32/36) but it just can't handle Saturday offroading, Sunday church runs, being parked in the garage all week, then trying to do it all over again next weekend. I haven't had good experience with the one I had in the CJ5 while at more than a 25 degree incline. Looks like I am stuck with the original two I was considering... Weber 38 and Holley 470. Now, can a Weber 38 handle a 30 degree or more incline.... and which one has the easier to find intake manifold....

@jayhawkclint: I am more than likely putting the MC2100 in the 79 silver anniversary I am building next as it is going to be strictly street and no highway what-so-ever.

Holley 470 on a Clifford intake off eBay.

Summit sells Offenhauser 258 intake new.

I will say again, the 470 is not the out-of-the-box carb Holley claims it to be. You will need to spend some time tuning it. I will have to search for my notes, or maybe Warloch or some others will chime in on some starting point numbers for you.

Thank you, any tuning tips will be very helpful. I will check out the Offenhauser intake; the Clifford seems to be 250-300 new.

Pretty much any carb will need tuned to match an individual engine.

Agreed, but that is not what Holley advertises in their literature regarding the TA.

Okay, Holley 470 is it. If I want to run the Weber, it is great on the road but taking it into rock crawling, I need to do a bunch of drilling and run a new vapor line out the side so it doesn't flood at high angles. With my 4.0 head conversion, is this the correct intake manifold to use with the carb?

If so, I will begin the purchasing or ... saving. Still owe some $$$ for the trans and t-case so the jeep fund from the paycheck on the 1st will but this stuff.

Yes, that is the correct manifold.

Surprising to hear that a 2100 has trouble with inclines. I've ran the stock one on my 75 for a coupla decades without hardly a blip. The only problem I've ever had with them is every 4 or 5 years the diaphragm starts to harden and they run like poop until you put a kit in them. I stood that Jeep up and it came to rest on the spare one day tryin to get up a waterfall and it blubbered but it didn't die until I shut it off. The only thing I do to it is set the float a little lower than the sheet in the kit calls for and that's it. Maybe mine is just an oddball but I wouldn't get rid of it for anything. Also had a Holley with an Edelbrock SP2P manuifold on my 79 with a 304 years ago and that thing would blubber going over a speed bump at the grocery store. I have a 670 Truck Avenger on my CJ7 with a 360 and I need to take it off and do some tuning on it as its not running right yet.
I've noticed that Holley and Edelbrock like to advertise that their products will run right out of the box (and I would say the same thing if I had a carb to sell) but they can't claim that for every single application out there. I'm sure there are people out there whose carbs did run perfect right out of the box but I've never been one of those guys; wish I was.:) I kinda hafta go along with Nick; even my stock 2100 needed a little tweaking to suit my taste and I think thats really the bottom line. I say pick out your favorite carb, try it and let us know how it works and we'll all learn somethin.:)

    FWIW,

    Mike

Trying the Holley 470 and if I don't like it, the 2100. The Weber 38 will be bought and sitting on the shelf in my garage just in case (Got a sweet deal on a new one).
