TFI or Weber 38/38

    Hey guys here's the story. 73 cj5 with a I6 258 bored .30 over upgraded cam 4.0 head swap and a Weber 38/38. I'm having a hesitation problem. on easy (very easy) throttle she runs just fine but on heavy throttle she starts missing sputtering sometimes back firing. Well just running like crap. I think I'm getting flash over or just a serious loss of ignition capability. On the other hand I could be running to small of Jets but I'm think more of a ignition problem. I've been looking into DUI MSD TFI etc... Well I would like to go TFI but from what I'm reading I need a different distributor for that to happen. I do have a extra Distributor that came out of a 81 engine. What I don't have is any sort of electronic control. I have rewired with a painless wiring kit but basically resistor and power wire. The pics I got show the installed dist and then the extra. What I want to know is, is the extra dist the one I need to do the TFI and if so how do I wire it up. The wiring diagram I got just shows it going to a electronic ignition box which I don't have. So what's a guy to do. Can anyone tell me what the wires are?     A friend of mine told me that, if I put a transistoried/electronic system, there is a risk to have a too strong current and this can create a bad contact /electric arc/ which can make a hole inside the engine.

    So I try to get new spare parts becaus ewith electricity you cannot know what happens inside.
    It can look nice but when hot it changes.

    also it must be check to be on the good angle, ignition must start at the exact time.(stroboscope)

    Of course there can be the problem of too old parts, so it is not possible to have a good ignition.

    But I am not enough specialist, I forgot, except the fact that to have the new aprts, I have to make a check...unfrotunately!:(

    i run an hei out of a chevy i6. one wire simple. runs way better. the gear off of your factory delco dist fits on the chevy dist(also a delco)

    This. Have done several and work very well. Easier startup, better idle, reduced hesitation, better fuel economy, good parts availability.
    Just make sure you run a larger gauge wire to the distributor. 14-12 gauge works best. Eliminate any inline resistors. You need full battery voltage to the distributor.

    Any chance you got a part number or year to look for? Is it a factory dis or chevy hei aftermarket part. I like simple.. thanks RJ

    1980 c10 pick up with a 250... fwiw any inline 6 chevy after 1975 will have the hei. dont get the esc(electronic spark control) version that came around 81 or 2 and later

    If you want to use the '81 distributor, you can. It will work with the original module from '81, or a GM HEI module, or something like an MSD 6A capacitor discharge module.

    Connecting the parts is not difficult - the Motorcraft Duraspark distributor that you have uses the same physical principle as the HEI distributor, so there is no functional advantage to the HEI over the Duraspark.

    If it were mine, I would use the Duraspark distributor, or use the Duraspark as a core for a rebuilt Duraspark from a '78 CJ-5 with a 258. A reman distributor is only about $50, and that would get you new electronics and a new vacuum diaphragm. If you want to use the old distributor, test that the vacuum advance works with something like a Mity-Vac.

    Then I would use the Duraspark distributor with the TFI parts and either a GM HEI module or a MSD 6A or StreetFire module. MSD sells a conversion harness 8869 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8869 for their modules to the Duraspark distributor, which you can use with their module or cut up to use with the HEI module.
