    Hey guys,

I am building a 1982 CJ7 Jamboree as you can see from my other posts. I have one question:

What should I do with the exhaust?

I am technically subject to emissions testing but I slapped my disabled vet plate on so I will never see another DEQ again.
I don't want to bother with emissions, CAT, and all that plus I don't want it too low under the car since this is a rock crawler.

I was considering going straight out the hood or through the drivers side in front of the back wheel but I don't know......

Give me your best placement ideas.

Why not do the MB style turn outs under the doors? Too low?

Im running true dual exhaust all the way out the back, inside the frame. The exhaust tips are between the leaf spring and the frame at a 45° angle.

This is what it sounds like.

A little hard to see, but here's the best example I could find in a quick online search of side exit exhaust. Now that I look at it, it's looking way too low. I'd consider tucking it up inside.

Chris, when you take your frame up to R&P ask to see Richard's 3b and how the exhaust is run on that. It exits out the tub corner at 45 degrees and is tucked up nice. A good exhaust shop can give you duals or a single and tuck it up out of the way if you plan on running inside the frame. Going out the tub corners minimizes exhaust fumes that swirl back in the cab also.....

As you can see, the mufflers are tucked up real nice. :)

@nickmil: I will ask to check it out and will keep it an option.

@jeepasuarusrex: I like how yours are tucked up and away. In all reality, I don't want a CAT and muffler and all that jazz so the less metal and junk, the better. I also had issues with dropping my trans and t-case with the pipping in the way so I wouldn't want to deal with that a second or third time around when I get old and frail (many many years down the road).

I just want a clean exhaust that will be hassle free and no unnecessary junk. I will keep your style in mind (tucked away) with a straight back pipe. :D

    BTW, awesome Jeep dude.

Im not running any cats, just strait pipe to the mufflers. I built my own system out of 45°, 90° elbows and some strait pipe. All the welds were covered with cold galv spray.

I like your set up than! It is really pertie. ;)

Tell me, what's the con to chopping my muffler off and just running a straight pipe from the headers?

You'll want mufflers, they aren't going to impact performance and some will actually tell you they will hurt your performance. There seems to be a whole science behind back pressure, collector types, etc.. mehhI ran into a CJ7 a few years back running straight pipes right off the headers, it was disgustingly loud.

Ridiculously loud and you need some sort of spark arresting device to run in National Forest Land in Oregon and Washington. The muffler meets that requirement. So, if you plan on going to Brown's Camp, etc. you will need muffler(s)
