    Hi there,

    My CJ6 has a VIN that provides me some difficulties decoding it with the sources found already.

    Color 559 and trim is pewter gray poly with black interestingly since she came oliv drab complete with a slight coat of red shining partially under it.

    The issue with the VIN (j5f84be0xxx) is the BE I can't find in any manual/source.

    Any ideas?

    PS: recently bumped into a 1 owner 73 CJ6 original 304 in quite ok shape with full documentation of the buy. And that in southeastern Europe. A great resto base with a great history.

    B = 4000# GVWR
    E = 232 cid, 1V

    It's in the '75 TSM or the parts book. You could buy the TSM...

    Color is 559 Pewter gray Poly (metallic), trim is the right-hand-most number under the "38" - could be "422" black vinyl bucket seats.

    It all looks fine to me.

    Thank you very much. Been confused since I found a source telling the 7th digit B meant an iron duke and I have the 238 in. Another source had no B in the gross weight table.
    And yes. It's a 422 interior in. At least it has been black before the PO painted everything olive. Everything.

    VIN number formats change from year to year. The factory service manual for your exact year is your best reference. They are available as reprints, and are worth the purchase price.

    Here is one seller: http://thejeep.com/shop/TECH+MANUAL....html?osCsid=77665c03923fc3f4b418d36c1f7b75c1 - there are many others.

    The Iron Duke was not offered until 1980, and Jeep never offered a 238 cid engine. Those errors alone should teach you the reliability of those sources.

    I meant the 3,8l. Metrical spoken, so 232. My mistake. Am not used at all to this engine compared to the 258.
    I have the TSM for my 78 and some other vintage cars and share your opinion about the benefits of it.
    I usually buy one if I am sure to keep a car. Since I found an other CJ6 I think I'll sell that one.

    Just as a reference. This link is the most comprehensive I could find (after I placed the question). All other sources missed the B in the Gross weight.

    Again. Thank you.
