I have the 3 bolt jeep CJ manual steering box ( was listed for years 72-86) with a standard 7 inch pitman arm. Is it possible to get one that is 5.5 inches long?
What do I need to look for? Or ask for?

Is it possible to cut and weld a pitman arm? Just not safe?

    Thank you

Not safe to cut and weld IMO. I have a pitman arm for a manual box at home. I'll measure it tonight.

I wouldn't cut and weld it, cast iron is very touchy to weld and prone to failure if don e incorrectly.

Stay away from welding on a piece like that......................as far as a straight arm at 5.5 inches I think only the dropped Power steering arms are that short............why the need to change? Is this something your now installing?

Parts Mike 530-885-0673 above Sacramento on Hiway 80 has a shelf full of different arms for different applications.

I took the jeep out today. The two rods are hitting with the left front wheel up. A six inch will work . I'm afraid a dropped arm will have problems with the springs.

THe dropped Power steering arms will not work on a Manual Box anyway...........different size sector shaft. Check with Parts Mike.......I have seen them pull a rabbit out of a hat before.

There are dropped Piman arms that will work with the manual box but as Terry said, the pitman shaft for manual is different from power gear boxes. Also be aware '72-'75 arms are clocked different from '76-'86 models due to the angle the steering box is mounted.
