Not sure why i got to thinking about this. But would a CJ dana 30 outer stub shaft use the same ujonit as say an XJ or YJ dana 30? I am thinking you could do a cheap locking hub conversion if you swap over the outer stub and cj knuckle to a later housing allowing the locknig hub to be used. So pretty much swap everything (including outer axle) from knuckle out to do this. Downside would be the lug pattern would be incorrect but you could probably swap out the rear axle at the same time with a stronger 5 lug axle.

I think the Ujoint size is different for the CJ outters and the XJ/YJ axles. You can buy upgraded shafts that would allow you to use the larger size u-joints.

On a modern 30, the ball joints are on the axle/inner Cs. CJ dana 30s and all older 44s the ball joints were on the outer knuckle. There was an article along time ago on pirate by BillaVista where he put the older inner Cs on a modern 30 to use the outers with lock outs. It seemed to me at the time to be way more work then was worth it. I bet that write up could still be found if you wanted to read it.

I did find on rockauto that the ujoint numbers were the same between a yjdana 30 and the cj. The ball joints didnt match, i may have to look at the writeup.
