Jerry Cans - check me on this

I'm kicking around putting some some Jerry Can mounts on the rear of SSDutch's rollcage - so they'd sit on the rear fenderwells between the rollcage and edge of the body. I'm thinking of one for a gas can and one for a water can.

I like the Con-Ferr mounts b/c they're small and not so noticeable when not carrying the cans:

But IIRC they assume the cans are the older "blitz" style that have a lip around the bottom. I'd rather run the newer style cans like this:

Edit - actually I'd rather use the plastic cans like this:

Am I right in thinking these cans don't have that lip, so I'd have to use Jerry Can mount like these:

Anyone using those newer style Jerry Cans?

    Boyink,

I got one of the newer style cans as an Xmas gift, and it doesn't fit too well in my "old style" holder. (Like above pic...) It's tight in the corners.
you should be able to bend the holder some, but it might not be a drop in.
    YMMV

Thanks...have you had gas in the can yet? I'm concerned about fumes since the cans will be inside the top.

I don't remember for sure which ones they were , but I really liked the set that Tim had at Tellico in Lulu. I think they were like the blue one you have pictured above.

Mike you may want to check laws in your area, but I'm fairly certain that it is illegal to cary a can full of gas inside the passenger compartment of any vehicle....02 Randy

  6. Randy, you may be right. But what about that 10 gal one most of us sit on? :p R)

Yeah - I'm not too concerned about the legality issues at this point. It *may* even be illegal to carry them hanging off the tire rack, for that matter. Seems like you'd have to be able to carry full gas cans from the station home to fill up your mower, etc anyway.

Safety-wise, I figure 6" further back and a vinyl top inbetween isn't going to add much. Might even be safer than hanging off the rear.

Thinking I'll just make some mounts - seems like it wouldn't take much to make something a bit beefier than the sheetmetal versions, and I could weld it to the cage so it carries the wieght rather than the fenderwells.

  8. Mike: I agree with you. Not much room on the back of mine with a 33" tire. Just haven't figured out a good mount on the inside yet. I have one of the old style NATO steel cans with the clamp on lid--a quality item.

That tank isn't venting to the inside of the vehicle, at least it isn't supposed to...

Could probably figure a way to vent the Jerry can to the outside...

I have the newer plastic Jerry cans, and they do a good job of sealing themselves. Whenever I carry them home from the gas station inside a car, I never smell any fumes.

I can't help with the mount because I haven't figured out where I think it would be safest to carry them yet. Since I won't have room on my spare tire rack, they'll most likely go on the wheelwells where you're putting yours, with some sort of metal bracket strapping them to the roll cage.

Guys I'd advise against cans inside with gas in them.
Water is fine and that is a good idea Mike about the holders, sure beats bungee cording it in.
Please guys use the outside mount for gas cans.

Gas bad!! I dont like having gas cans that will leak or vent inside.
Beside the fact its not legal in all most all the states.
Think about the kiddos and gas fumes.
My sandrail has a fuel cell that sets behind the seats and we can smell it. Thats in open air.

So I buy good cans that don't leak and vent them to the outside.

Just can't see how much different it would be than on the tire rack, where it's more likely to get damaged.

Not relly supposed to carry them outside full either.
Kind of a catch me screw with me kind of thing.

How are you thinking on venting them to the outside?

    *shrug*

Some kind of a hose routed out through a window zipper to a breather of some sort.

    Useing the cap I'd guess?
May work better running it through a hole in the fender so its not hanging in plain sight. ;)
Just please think long and hard before you mount a full can of gas inside.

I just don't see how it's really that much different, esp. when top is down.

Its more of a spill issue. If it spills outside not as big of an issue.
