Anyone use anything to seal the floorboard sheet metal when screwing them down with some weatherstripping or something? Or just screw it down metal to metal?

I've used the stick down foam weather seal, not sure if it really makes a differenc or not.

    permatex ultra black adhesive sealant.
around the shifter openings where the boot tore away, i cut a piece of the thin, self-adhesive carpet squares to fit the opening, cut a single slit about 4" long for the shifter to move, then laid it down and screwed the retaining/trim ring back down over it. works great. keeps the noise and road crud from getting inside.

I use 1" poly web belt material. I just slightly overlap at corners and put a dab of RTV. Once I punch one out for the access I can use it over and over. Melt the edges and holes. If it gets really muddy/oily I just pressure wash it. They stand up real well. I use the belt material on front fenders, grill, under gas tank, any where there could be metal to metal contact. http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Webbing/1-Inch-Polyester-Webbing
Those folks are just one supplier. I use black. You could probably pick it up at a hobby store or surplus place.

  6. Personally I don't use anything just metal on metal. I want to have water drip out and not puddle inside the jeep when it gets wet

All my CJ's and M38A1 have had factory floor drains. In each footwell near the rockers.

  8. Yeah mine have those also but I never knew they should have a rubber seal on them. Learn something new. Still when I off road I leave those floor drains open and don't seal the transmission metal on metal and don't have much if any water or mud join me in the cab through those spots.

I don't think there was a rubber seal until '76 or later, if then. The original seal is a little figure-8-shaped metal door, that pivots about a screw in the center to cover both holes.

Talking about Early jeeps... The photo I linked before seems to show a rubber seal that can be riveted to the figure-8 drain cover. Maybe military spec - I've never seen one with the rubber. Or maybe from the flatfender era?

Huh. Never seen one like that. I put away a lot of Jeep parts, and I don't recall anything like that. Maybe the rubber is a modern enhancement? (as in somebody's idea about how to make the factory part better?) All I've seen is the metal part and center screw, absent the rivets, rubber and rivet holes.

    Maybe it's exclusively M38A1.
