My 1963 CJ5 has a dipstick that was welded by a PO, so I don't know if it is correct. I'm about to change oil and thought I would put in the correct amount and check the level to see if the dipstick is right. Of the various charts I've found online, the capacity is 4, 4.5, or 5 quarts, and none spell out whether that includes a filter change. Can someone tell me what is correct?

I'd use four quarts, and five with a filter change if you drain the canister. This is the factory spec for early types.

    Thanks, guys.
I got a 5.1 quart jug of Mobil 1 and put it all in (with canister drain). The dipstick level ended up exactly on the full mark. Close enough for me.

Some people say not to use modern oils because they can be aggressive with old components.
So I use a more classic oil.
It maybe useful to check with experts.
