Clutch Pedal Up or Clutch Pedal Down?

In reading the owner's manual to my "new to me" 1974 CJ5 I was surprised to learn that to shift from 2WD to 4WD High or from 4WD High to 2WD, I should just maintain my speed and keep my foot on the accelerator and jam the transfer case lever to the 4WD high,or 2WD position. This seems counter intuitive to me as I assumed that I should depress the clutch pedal (clutch "disengaged"?) before shifting moving parts. But, since this is from the original owners' manual I will assume it is correct.

The Jeep also has a Ramsey PTO winch. Here is a copy of the "instruction plate" for using the winch:

My question is: "Should I depress the clutch pedal before pulling the PTO lever, or should I just pull the lever without putting the clutch pedal down?" It is not clear from the instruction plate. It just says, "Engage PTO". And it has a WARNING that says "Only shift PTO while in gear with engine running".

Can anyone clear this up for me?

    Thanks!

Intersting, but the pto bit is a bit more intersting to me.
As long as both axles are the same ratio, tires are all the same size, hubs already locked in, you shouldn't have much problem going from 2HI to 4H or back. I have had to "blip the throttle" before to get back to 2WD while putting a minimal amount of force on the lever.

Yes, put the clutch in first. Pictures of the PTO would be interesting. It must be an old Spicer unit that mounted to the bottom of the transfer case.

I'M always doing it this way without knowing that it is the right way to do it. It's prety easy since the is not much stress on the t-case.

Transfer case two to four high either way no clutch I can go four low to four high without stopping most times by matching Rpms with the throttle and ground speed

As long as the front and rear driveshafts are turning the same speed it's no issue shifting from 2 to 4 WD and back.
You will need to push in the clutch to engage the pto or you will be trying to engage a non turning gear with a turning one (assuming transmission is in gear).

Ramsey, Koenig, and others manufactured pto units that bolted to the bottom of the 20 transfer case also.

I have never shifter anything into or out of 4 wheel drive on the fly except big tractors. I will try this.

i basically have the same setup with the ramsey pto winch. to engage winch i usually put transfer in neutral and transmission in neutral. pull the nob for pto and then engage winch, put in gear an pull.

the pto winch is one of the reasons i bought the jeep.

as for transfer case operation, i always shift with the clutch pushed in. seems it would put the least amount of stress on driveline

I'm assuming the 74' had a D20 transfer case? If so does this also apply to the single stick D18?

Thanks to you all for the feedback. I will continue to depressing the clutch pedal when using the PTO and winch. I was incommunicado for the TG weekend, camping with the jeeps in E. Mojave. I will try to get a photo of the Ramsey PTO.
