Tilt Column Installation

Hi all,

Like a lot of us I have been doing my build for the past couple of years and have been using this forum a lot to help solve problems and get ideas for my build. I have read hundreds of questions and responses on installation and ideas for tilt columns and wanted to share what I came up with and actually just finished. For the record I didnt go the cheap route so please dont judge hahah but all in all I think it came out pretty clean.

I started with a new dash from Dan at Double D fabrication. With his help we came up with a nice design. check out his site, he makes amazing dashes.



I bolted up the dash and then I purchased a Flaming river 2" x 30" tilt column with out ignition of course.


I knew the old steering column dash mount was not going to work and I didnt want to spend the time cutting out the original stamped column mount so I decided to make my own out of 10ga steel. I used cardboard and probably measured 100x to get the hole centered with the correct distance of drop. Came up with 3" hole with a 1 1/4" drop from the top.


Then I purchased a 2" dash mount clamp from Flaming river and and mounted it to the firewall using the existing firewall bracket. I drilled and tapped the flaming river clamp and then cutoff the excess "ears"




Then I needed to mount it to the dash and be able to get the right angle. I found a 2" swivel c-clamp floor mount from borgeson and mounted it to my dash


Keep in mind, Im doing a complete frame off resto mod, so Ive already upgraded and added power steering, so I added a flaming river shaft with cpl's and attached to my new steering box



I have to say, on bolt up I was pretty nervous about fitting it in between my upper shock mount and headers but with a little tweek I moved the firewall column mount over to the right 1" and fit perfectly!

Then all I had to do was find center in my steering box, attach the drag link and install the steering wheel. So here is what she looks like with steering complete

Haha I know! It's so much easier now because I don't have to worry about scratching anything!
