pics of the 75 CJ5

Here is the 75 CJ5 that i have been working on...sold to the US Government in 75 by AMC, sold off surplus, I am the third owner after to USAF. my oldboss was the 2nd owner, he had it for about 8 months before he sold it to me...The first owner used it as a surf jeep...floor pans are toast as are the springs...but I dig it...goes faster than the 2A and the hardtop keeps me warm in the winter...

Looks great the way it is.... What engine did/does it have in it? I am just curious what engine AMC provided the USAF in 1975.

 

Thanks guys...it has the 258 4.2...these were basically off the rack vehicles bought as a way to help AMC and give the military general purpose vehicles...not combat ready...this one, I am told, provided perimeter security at Dover AFB by the security police squadron....It has a OD top coat and from what I can see, a darker forest green base coat...maybe a metallic paint?

Still has the data and government property plates on dash..

Came with a rifle rack, rear floor mounted, and winch, both I removed...not sure who, when, or why they were installed...both went to my son who has a 78 CJ7

It really needs a set of springs on her...thinking ten leaf... I like the nice high, firm look...the ten leaf gives the CJ5...Saw where a guy was doing a frame off and he put 10's on both front and rear and she was sitting nice with no lift kit... all I need in Delaware....

 

Mmm. You sure it's a 258 and not a 232? As an agency vehicle, I would have expected a 232. What's the engine code?

 

Engine code is 806 E 05.... = 1975 July 232...so it is a 232?, and is a 4.2?

 

That's a 232 ("E" code) built on June 5, 1975.
8=1975
06=June
E=232
5=5th day

A 258 is "A" for 1V or "C" for 2V. But no 2V 258s before 1977.

You should have an "E" in your VIN too.

So the dash sticker says July 1975? The VIN should have an E in it too.

61 cid per liter, so 232/61 = 3.8L. The 258 is 258/61 = 4.2L.

The 232 has a shorter stroke than the 258, with a different crank, rods and pistons. The 232 was the standard engine, and the 258 was optional - though the 258 option was not very expensive and almost always purchased by individuals.

 

232 had smaller valves in the head, too.

 

Parts book says all six cylinders use the same valves - 232, 258, CJ, truck, wagon - '75-80. And '74 promotes to the '75-on part. Seems unlikely that the 232 would have different valves from the 258, since they are the same bore.

304 valves are smaller than the 360/401 valves - could that be what you are recalling?
