I've had a few electrical questions over the last couple months that have been quickly answered. This board is a lot of help. All of my electrical issues are solved, now a few mechanical issues. This CJ hasn't been driven since 2006. I pulled the top of the transmission cover off and it was completely empty. I filled it up, did some other work on it. A few hours later I decided to drive it around the neighborhood. It only goes in 1st and Reverse. It will not go into 2nd or 3rd, it won't even come close. I've tried while its been running and sitting with engine off. It will not go. 2nd issue I have is while trying to reverse it into my driveway it went about 6 ft, binded up, and then started bucking like crazy. As long as I keep the reverse distance short it does what it should. It has:

    New motor/ tranny/ tcase mounts
New Ujoints with freshly greased driveshafts
    Brakes bled fine, no issues
    Fresh axle oil

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about the bucking, but not going into 2nd-3rd indicates that the 2-3 shift collar is frozen. With the transmission top off, you should be able to move the 2-3 collar, and the 1-R sliding gear. The 2-3 collar is more complicated, since it moves against the blocking rings for synchromesh. With the top off, you can put the transmission into 2 gears (ie R and 3) - the design of the shift top prevents this. See if you can move the shift top freely with it off (ie make sure it's not the shift rail in the shift top that is frozen).

If you can't move the 2-3 collar by hand, I expect the transmission is going to have to come out for dis-assembly and inspection.

My first thought is are you sure you lined the shift forks up right when you put the cover back on?

Ah yes. I'll pull the top and double check that. The transmission was rebuilt 15k ago. I drove it as a dd for 3 years until I wrecked it and put it in a barn. It shifted smooth and ran fine so I'm hoping its as simple as me putting the top on wrong.

Works best for me to have the shifter in neutral when I install it, just a FWIW. ;)

I pulled the shift tower. Forks were lined up correctly. All the gears seem fine and no issues with the synchros. The shift tower however barely has any movement in it. You have to hit the stick pretty hard to get it to move in any direction. It almost feels like it's rusted stuck. I cleaned it but it's still pretty gritty looking. Is it time for another overhaul or just a new shift tower?

Clean it good and spray it with penetrating oil. Not much to a shift top - look at figure 6-24 here http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/6-ManualTransmission.pdf - the T-90 should be the same. The shift rails have to move freely. Once you have the top off, there are only three pins and two end caps, and it's apart.

I don't know if there is a T-90 shift top parts kit... there is for other transmissions. It would contain all the little parts you see in the drawing.

    Shifter binding/stiff=transmission binding/stiff.

Fix the shifter issue first then see how it works.

Transmission is all good. Let it soak in some cleaner overnight. From sitting up with little to no oil the gear was stuck. Soaked, persuaded it, now it works better than it did in 2006. As nickmil suggested, binding in reverse is gone.

Thanks for the help as always.
