I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1967 CJ5 and need to get a replacement engine for my 225 Dauntless. The old motor isn't viable for rebuilding so I'm wondering what my options are for a bolt in replacement V6 with the largest displacement possible . I've looked at a 231 or a 252 and want to get any opinions on them as far as where to what cars and years to find them in and opinions on each . Again I want to keep the factory motor mounts to keep fabrication to a minimum. Thanks Bob

Ok... the Buick 231 is basically the 225 with a slightly larger bore size. It is a drop-in replacement for the 225. These come in odd-fire (like the 225) and even-fire variants.

You can replace the 225 with any of the small-block Buick V8s from the era with few modifications. These include the 300, the 340 and the 350. The 350 Buick is not the same as other 350 cid motors from GM that were used in Buicks, Pontiacs and Chevrolets ... it is a 100% Buick design. The 225 is simply 6/8s of the Buick 300, and the 340 and 350 are larger displacement variants of the 300. These V8s will drop on to the V6 motor mounts and bolt up to the existing bellhousing. You will need to move the radiator forward to accomodate the extra length of the V8 motor.

IMO these V8s are too powerful for the original manual transmissions in the V6 CJs. I think you should stay with the 225 or 231 unless you are ready for a transmission swap to go along with the engine swap. In that case, you are in pretty deep and may as well go with a small block Chevy V8...

Some people on here like the 225 better than the 231. Say it has more power and better heads.

What's wrong with your 225 that makes it not rebuildable?

It has a hole in the side of the block. What about the 252 I've seen mentioned here?

The 252 is much harder to find parts for than either the 225 or 231.

Where in Colorado are you? I have a 225 block available if you want to PM me.

The 225s come up for sale on here occasionally. They are also found on ebay. Its not a particularly rare engine.

I found a rear wheel drive 231 for 79-84 vehicles. Is this engine a possible replacement for my 67 CJ5 and would it be OF or EF. Bob

1979.............Even Fire. There are some parts that will not cross over from an early OF to later EF.
