Any body know of a manufacturer that makes a front fender flair that is correct for an early CJ? Looking for one without the indentation for the marker lights on the later CJ's. Or ones that could be modified so they can look correct on a early CJ. Would like to find ones that would get more coverage maybe 4-6" of coverage.

I have been looking for Them for awhile now. I haven't found any yet. If you find a source make sure you post it.

In my mind, flares were never truly "correct" for an early.

IIRC, they were a later accessory. Don't recall ever seeing them until the '70's.

The earliest instances I recall used the bulk rubber fender extensions sold for big trucks and trailers. That can work well, if you install them so they don't have a ripple between the fasteners. Also, if you tighten the fasteners too much, there will be a visible ripple. Maybe you could make a backing strip that runs the entire length of the flares, and eliminate any sag or ripple between the fasteners.

You're right, but they did make them without the marker light cutout when they started becoming popular. I had some like Tim shows, but couldn't stand the way they looked so ended up taking them back off years ago.

Tim is correct. Back in 71 when I got mine JC Whitney sold the fender extensions in bulk. You ordered however much you needed. They came with about a 1" wide metal backing strip and some clips that you clamped the fender extensions on to the lip on the finders. Because they are just a bulk roll, you have cut and design them youself as far as length, curves, etc. They were made out of very good rubber that as you can see in the picture, last a long time, I still have them on. Not too bad for being 44 years old. Because they are so soft, like Tim said it is hard to keep them from rippling. I found the secret was to use a lot of the clips to help get the ripples down. But on the good side, they are much more plyable then the harder molded ones made now, so if you get close to a tree or something they just fold in and pop right back and do not get hurt like the harder ones can.
