I have a 1966 CJ5 with F134, Solex carb and electric fuel pump and I wanted to put a vacuum gauge on it to adjust fuel mixture and timing. When I measure vacuum from the barbed fitting on the carb spacer I only get a few inches of mercury that increase with RPM like ported. I pulled the PCV line from the valve cover and sure enough, plenty of vacuum but when I plugged it with my thumb, the RPMs dropped quite a bit. When I re-connect the PCV hose it maintains the higher idle as if there were an open vacuum line. Is this normal? Should I route the PCV vacuum to the upper vacuum port?

The place to get vacuum test readings is from that brass elbow below the carb, in your pic. (After disconnecting the line to the vacuum pump and vacuum wipers, if any.)

Your PCV should also be plumbed to that port, with a working PCV valve at the lower (exhaust) valve cover.

On my '60, that fitting shown just above the distributor is plumbed across the front of the engine at the edge of the valve cover to the PCV at the rear side valve cover, with a capped 'T' just behind the fuel pump that used to run up to the vacuum motors for the wipers. I use that capped "T" for hooking up my vacuum gauge for readings.

Uhhh, why do you have a wire connected to the carburetor?
