Oh Magoo, you've done it again (thinking of changing my logon name). I got a real good deal on a set of early Bronco 11 brakes. nice condition, look like they had recently been rebuilt, pretty! :D

So there I am in the middle of a two hole knuckle install/swap to 11 inch brakes/single piece tierod/steering stabilizer install adventure when I notice that the center hole on the drum is 1/2 inch smaller than the 10" jeep unit. Hmmmmm :? Not to worry, I take it across the garage to chuck it (11 inch drum) in my lathe (12" atlas) and.... wait for it... it won't fit because of the extra hurkey flange ford put on the outside of it. (heavy bugger too) Blast!

Sooooo the question is, will a set of 11 inch jeep drums like the ones Michaelo has in the FS section find happiness mounted on a set of really nice EB backing plates with innards???

signed: Magoo (broken down sittin in the garage staring at jeep waitin on parts)

PS: anyone need a couple of really nice 11" round boat anchors?

I know very little of machine shoppery - but couldn't you try another shop - ya know outside of your garage? Or is this a fatal flaw of the boat anchors to be and no shop would be able to do it at a reasonable cost?

I'm not big on paying someone else to do machine work. I have found their prices to be generally prohibitive. I suspect I can buy another set of drums for not much more that they will want to open these up.

i got a pair from Michaelo a couple years ago and they do fit your hubs. i do not know for sure if they will fit with the bronco setup though.

I too bought a set of 4 brand-new 11" drums from Michaelo a few years ago. These are the ones I drilled, they worked great for me, fit perfectly over the hubs. As Chris said, not sure about how they'd work on a Bronco set up... guessing OK since the bolt pattern is the same :?

I wish i had one of my manuals that i have back home in Seneca that listed all the brake specs for all for all of the 4x4s. I beleive they will work if they are 11x2 drums but i can't be for sure with out checking the manuals.

I expect the 11x2" Bronco brakes are the same as the 11x2" F100 brakes of the same vintage - ie Bendix, just like Jeep. I know that F100 brakes can be used for CJs but the backing plates have to be machined. Don't know any more details for certain. I'd expect they are cut out with a vertical mill and a fly cutter though.

Ok because I am wading out into the murky water here with this, I will pass along what I learn... I went to pep boys this afternoon to see a 11 CJ drum and let me just say that I won't be paying that for a brake drum any time soon.

Next my buddies at NAPA. cheaper and they actually had some in stock. tried them on the assembled brake backing plate and everything looks good. took a measurement of the distance from the back of the backing plate to the back of the drum and it matches the ford measurement so I think I am in. the backing plates are from a 75 bronco D44 front. the ford shoes measure 1 3/4" wide, and I believe the jeep ones are 2, don't think that will affect them much.

The backing plates are mounting up fine without any modification.

Still have those 11" ford boat anchors if anyone wants them :D

Could you chuck the drums in your lathe internally? Hold on to the inside of the drum rather than the outside. That's how I did mine.

Oh trust me on this, I don't call it the stone aged machine shop for nuthin...I've tried everything I can think of. reality is the diameter of the drum due to the flange is almost 13" which when setting on the ways puts the center of the drum about 3/8" higher than center of the lathe.
