Hello, I have a few questions. Is anyone else running both pumps? I'm still going through my new 1966 cj5 Tux and found that it has an electric fuel pump along with the mechanical. I can hear the electric pump turn on when ignition key is turned to start/run. Did the PO add this to help in priming the carb, or help in a weak mechanical fuel pump delivery?
Should I delete the mechanical? Any problem to have both being used at the same time?

    thanks,
    Roy

Many times an electric was added to 'fix' vapor locking or a weak mechanical. I've had electrics on rigs as a backup, and on a separate switch for times where there was a problem (usually climbing or vapor issues) until I could get them sorted out.

Not a fan of leaving them on there - some are.

Depending on the carburetor and air cleaner, the PO could have been having trouble with the float bowl drying out. This is a persistent problem with the Motorcraft carburetors on the V8 Jeeps, but the V6 and Rochester is not so problematic, AFAIK. Do you have no air cleaner, or maybe a big open element air cleaner? The open element will let the bowl dry out faster than the factory air cleaner.

What make/type of electric pump is it?

My V6 had both when I got it from the PO. I removed the electric and carry it as a spare for when it might be needed. Best as I can tell it was put on to help a dying pump that then caused me some problems. After replacing the mechanical pump I have had no problems. Do notice it takes little more cranking to get started when its been sitting as opposed to electrical pump that ran on acc power. Used to fire up instantly no matter weather or how long it been sitting. Now can take a couple extra cranks to get fuel into the bowl but it works fine - just like it would have originally.

Thanks for the replies guys :) I will take a pic of the pump tomorrow. (I didn't see a name on it) It does have a larger open air element. Jeep runs really well and pulls hard throughout the powerband. I've never seen both systems together before, hence being curious. (The Dauntless v-6 has the Rochester 2G carb)
