Now Steve what EXACTLY are you looking for?

The engine compartment wiring harness is unique to the Renegade. It has its own part number from the factory. Take a look at the wiring connector just left of the main grommet at the firewall. It should have 6 wires coming out of the male part of the connector. One of these wires will connect to a resistor similar to the ballast resistor used on the ignition circuit. The resistor will be bolted onto the firewall with one of the screws that holds the grommet. I can see by the pics that this part of your original wiring is still intact. So, it should be easy to verify. Don't worry much about the resistor itself. That could have easily been removed.

There you have it, a unique R1 feature or part that's documented. If someone added the harness after the fact, it would've been a real pain to do it.

So Steve, is it the sixth wire thats important? Mine looks pretty much like Brad's. It's a six wire connector. on mine, the engine compartment harness side has 5 wires coming out of it, and the 6th actually has contact in there, but the wire is broken/cut off. It's in the row where there is only one contact. There are 3 rows, one with 3 contacts, one with 2 contacts, and one with 1 contact. The part that goes through the firewall looks to have all 6 wires. Any idea what the 6th wire and resistor is for?

That is it? You've been sitting on this info for how long?

    Are you messing w/ me?

I gotta go count some wires. BRB.

Brad - Yep, that's it. Actually, I've brought this up a few time before but no one could relate to it. I even posted pics.

If you look close at my pics there are 2 connectors. Both of mine are 6 wire on male side.

So now we know. Sure wish my JEEP wasn't so hacked up. If this is in fact true (and I don't doubt you) then at least one R1 built Sept. '69 was orange.

The difference in the wiring harness itself is the important part. The easiest difference to spot is the one that I already mentioned. I'll have to get back with you later on the wire connector positions.

Now I think we should try and dispell this fact/theory. I wonder if there are any JEEPS w/ a 6 wire connector that don't have the other goodies like skid plate and gearing, etc.

    Brad,

Would you mind posting or PM me your VIN? Near as I can tell, mine was probably built around Sept. 1969. Underneath my peeling black paint is a bright yellow, so I doubt mine is a renegade. I am ineterested in narrowing down my build date as I don't have the dash sticker. Thanks.

It's not the connector itself that's unique, it's the fact that 6 wires are connected to it. I believe all of the connectors on CJs of that era were the 6 wire type.

Not much really to question. The FPM shows a unique harness for the R1 with its own part number. However, it's my conclusion or opinion after looking at several R1s that the extra wire mentioned is at least one of the distinguishing characteristics of the special harness.

Thanks Brad! It looks like mine was made 343 units after yours. Sept. or Oct. would be the month then.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Steve I think we discussed this dual resistor at the show in San Marcos
If I recall, your Jeep has both resistors installed on the firewall
I guess the million $$ question is: what is it for ? and why ?
neither parts manual or service manual make any mention of dual resistors
have you ever traced your wires to see where they end up ?
    interesting observation

    Sparky,
I was thinking a registery listing VIN, owner info, vechile history and a couple of pics. Everyone seems to agree that 600 RII's were produced but know one seems to know how many RI's were ordered. The infromation on the home page is great but I think it would be nice to expand on it. It could provide a spot for all the additional little pieces of info i.e. different wiring harness. I've seen simalr registeries for other types of unquie vechiles i.e. Buick Regal GN/GNX owners. Just a thought.
    Can't wait for Windrock

Brad and I were talking about this.

We have a good start but I'd like to see it expanded as well.

I'll see what I can start setting up for you guys today.

Steve, Dan, & Robert - Since you guys have the most intact and complete R1's that I know of can we get some pics of this resistor and wiring harness? You can email them to me at the addy I posted above.

Jim, howzabout that part number for this critter. . .? :D

You're correct, we did discuss it in San Marcos. Since then, the subject ("Mystery Part") came up a few more times on the forum. I wasn't able to learn and/or confirm the purpose of the part until just recently. Tracing the wiring didn't help much because the PO swapped the electric oil pressure gauge for a mechanical one and left the wires hanging. As it turns out the 75 ohm resistor is specifically for the ammeter and oil pressure gauge, which as we all know was part of the Renegade package. It has its own part number in the FPM identified as for the Renegade. You're correct again about the FSM not mentioning the unique wiring and I haven't been able to find a wiring schematic specifically for the R1. There has to be one out there somewhere. I suspect that some of the early Renegade electrics were incorporated or carried over in later productions. So, my next goal is to see if a later FSM, maybe for the '72s, will shed some more light. Sorry to be so long winded. Hope someone finds this interesting stuff.
