I am temporarily hooking up my 55 cj5 willys to just get it started before I put the body on it. I got gas going in the cylinders, coil hooked to battery, plugs and wires in. I'm getting gas in the cylinders but don't think I'm getting spark. What am I doing wrong? The distributor is new as well as everything inside it. The coil is also new. I hooked up the on/off switch in line with the coil. The points gap is good.

I'm sure that others may jump in and correct any wrong statements on my part, but how long did you leave the coil hooked to the battery? IIRC, that's not a good thing to do.....

If you have only hooked the coil up while trying to start the engine, then either pull one of the plug wires and put it near the block to see if it is sparking, or hook up a timing light and see if it lights.

    What else guys?

    Welcome from Ohio, oldj. :)

Could be a number of things. What are the condition of the points & dwell? The Factory Service Manual details the starting circuit and troubleshooting. HTH
