    Stupid is as Stupid Does.

I smelled gas in my cab so I figured I had a leaky gas tank.

Boyink had one for sale so I bought his.

My fuel guage worked pretty good. Would register full when it was full but when I got down to about 1/4 tank it would register empty

So...I bought a new sending unit off ebay.

When Boyink's tank arrived I realized it already had a sending unit in it...practically brand new. And Boyink's tank was a bottom feed as opposed to my two line top feed.

No problem, I'll just make the change.

Pulled my old tank expecting to see a floor board soaked in gas and a rusty tank bottom. Surprise...no leak and the floor's dry and the tank is not rusty.

So I figure since I've already bought the new tank, I'd go ahead and swap them out with the new sending unit.

Install the tank and put the plug in the bottom and connect the rubber fuel line to the bottom. Yank out the return line since I don't need it any more.

Then I realize that my rubber fuel line is laying on top of my muffler.

Then I put fuel in it and realize I didn't use any teflon tape on the plug and fuel is leaking onto my muffler then onto the floor.

Then I connect the fuel sending unit wire and Voila! the fuel guage no longer works. So I swap out Boyinks sending unit with the new one. Voila! Still no guage.

Considered having the muffler relocated. Considered putting the old sending unit back into the new tank. Considered putting the old tank with the old sending unit back into the jeep. But...now I've got to replace the fuel line since I cut about 1'-0" off it to attach it to the bottom of the tank.

    I think that's about enough.

    Here's your sign John....[IMG]

It's OK man, we've all done these things....just store them in your bio-RAM and you'll be good next time.

About the sending unit...didja make sure that you have a ground from the sender to the gauge? A circuit with no ground ain't a circuit....

Yeah...I even cranked the engine and let it run. I'm not as worried about the guage as I am about having the rubber fuel line laying on top of the muffler. Basically if I stay with the bottom feed I'm going to have to move the muffler.

I can go back to top feed but I'll have to use my old sending unit which sort of works and sort of doesn't...if you know what I mean?

Did the sending unit have a plastic bottle looking float? They tend to leak and fill up with gas, obviously don't float after that. Happened to my wagon.

Bought it from 4WD and yes it was plastic. I used my Ohm meter and checked the sending unit buy tipping the tank back and forth. Sending unit is good. I need to trace the wire and look at the guage.

I agree. Sounds like a good time to buy some 5/16" steel tubing and get to work. If I can do it..........

On another note, I have 3 fuel tanks, and three sending units, and I still don't have a working guage. My guage is fine, but works on a different resistance than the Omix-Ada sending units. I am too lazy to fix it.

I should have clarified that I have an aftermarket fuel gauge. I would bet my stock fuel gauge is toast. My current sending unit was included from MTS when I got a poly tank. When full the gauge is at empty, then it slowly works to ~2/3 of a tank when I am out of gas. I think bending it in the opposite direction, and tweaking the amount of bend would solve my problems. Like I said, I am too lazy. I make a mental note of mileage when I fill up and re-fill at 100 miles no matter what.
