My starter has a strange sound. Hopefully someone here can help me fix it. I replaced the bendix with one from Walcks but it is making the same sound as before.

I think the ring gear is OK.

So this is a 134? Helps to put the year/model/equipment in your sig.

So yeah, it's a 134. It's really a Bendix drive. What does the starter drive look like now? The Bendix throws the starter gear out to the end of the shaft when the starter motor spins, and then it retracts when the engine overruns the starter motor.

Maybe you have a bad spot in the flywheel, and the engine stopped at the bad spot?

Can you characterize what the sound sounds like? Is the engine turning over?

The top photo is a video with all of the sounds.
The photo of the ring gear is as it was when the video was taken.
The starter spins freely when out of the jeep and connected directly to a battery but the bendix
does not extend. Does this sound like a solenoid problem?

It was working properly but the engine "kicked" diss-enguaging the bendix & now the bendix is stuck "in".

    Hit it with a BFH.

Nothing to do with the solenoid- on this model starter the solenoid is not involved with the bendix.

Might need a bit of lubrication.

Howard and Glenn are on the money.

    Lube the shaft a little.

I think I have tracked the starter issue back to the "NEW" bendix. Tell me what you think.
When out of the jeep and hooked directly to the battery the drive gear will spin and extend but will not lock into position and I can push it back with my finger after I remove the power.
Am I correct in thinking the drive gear should lock in the extended position until the engine kicks it back?

It sounds to me like the starter is working fine. Atleast at the beginning of the video. I think youre engine isnt right. probrobly timing. Its kicking over enough to disengage the bendix but not starting. but later in the video it seems the starter had enough of that and wouldnt kick out the bendix anymore. The bendix doesnt lock out. rolling it back in by finger is normal

    Thank you for the reply.
I have been under the impression that the starter drive will lock in the extended position until the motor kicks in back in. This is anF-134.

2 X on what Jeep 2003 said and what Tim said. Mine will do this once in a while when the engine kicks and doesn't start. The engine forces the Bendix to disengage when it fires, because it is spinning it faster than the starter can (*this is how it works) and what you are hearing is the starter motor spinning down without a load. I agree with others in here, though, that your engine should start much more easily than it is. You could have a timing or fuel issue. Most of the time, I don't need to even pull the choke on my 134, even when it sits all night, but when it is colder and I don't choke it to get it up on high idle, it will hit and do exactly what your starter is doing. My starter is new, because my ignition switch kept the Bendix engaged and the poor thing must have been spinning at 10,000 rpm while the engine was running. The pix below shows the result. The rear journal bearing didn't like it.

Well, I found a genuine made in USA starter drive at an old time shop.
Everything starter related seems to be working fine now.
    Now on to electrical problems.
